Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them sports a terrific cast that rivals even the Harry Potter films for star power. Its sequel will add yet another Hollywood heavyweight, though, as it has just landed Johnny Depp.
Deadline reported that the Pirates of the Caribbean actor is joining J.K. Rowling’s franchise in an as-yet unrevealed role. All we know is that it will be a co-starring part alongside Eddie Redmayne’s Newt Scamander. Apparently he may even pop up for a tiny cameo in the first movie – so keep your eyes open for that.
Depp will start work on the movie after he completes filming for a new adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express (directed by another Wizarding World alumn, Kenneth Branagh). Once he wraps on Fantastic Beasts, he will then move onto Labyrinth, a biopic about Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls, and Universal’s horror movie The Invisible Man. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (also known as Salazar’s Revenge in the UK) is arriving on May 26th 2017.
This casting comes at a time when Depp’s reputation has taken a bit of a hit in the public eye, after a personal scandal and a series of recent financial flops (Alice Through The Looking Glass, Mordecai ETC). Fans will no doubt be hoping that joining this sure-to-be hit franchise will reinvigorate his career once again.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is the first in a planned series of five movies, directed by David Yates and written by the Harry Potter author (in her screenwriting debut). It stars Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Allison Sudol with supporting turns from Colin Farrell, Ezra Miller, Jon Voight and Ron Perlman. It magicks onto cinema screens on November 18th in the US.
