5. Black Canary and the Birds of Prey
While Alysia and Frankie are Barbara’s best real-life friends, and Frankie is an ally when Batgirl is on the job, Barbara’s best fellow hero-friend has to be Dinah Lance, the Black Canary. As Oracle, Barbara recruited Black Canary to be her field operative, a pairing that became the highly popular comic (and unsuccessful TV series) Birds of Prey, uniting many of Gotham and the larger DCEU’s female heroes.
Elephant in the room: Black Canary has been and continues to be a part of CW’s Arrow, and no, DC’s film division hasn’t always been great at sharing with the TV shows. Witness Amanda Waller and the Suicide Squad being written out of Arrow before the movie was released. But there are already two Flashes and Supermen, so frankly, why not at this point?
Just give us a few hints of her. Mayble intel emailed from “DL” or “BC,” references to an old partner with government connections, or even a cameo appearance. Not a lot of Black Canary, this is a solo Batgirl movie after all. Just enough to open a door for a sequel, Batgirl and the Birds of Prey. And from there, maybe a crossover with David Ayer’s Gotham City Sirens?
Perhaps we’re just getting over-excited at this point, but can you blame us? Batgirl, Black Canary, and Huntress fighting and teaming up with Catwoman, Harley Quinn, and Poison Ivy? That feels like money in the bank to us.
We’ll hear more about what Joss Whedon’s Batgirl will look like after he starts work on it next year, but any of these concepts would be a good place to start.
