At the minute, Marvel is juggling quite a few productions. With their 2017 releases almost finished on set, they’re gearing up for shoots on their 2018 slate. While Avengers: Infinity War is on their to-do list, Black Panther is set to start filming in the next couple of months. That means they need to quickly round out their cast, and by the sounds of things that’s just happened. Could we be about to see Andy Serkis return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
Recent reports are claiming director Ryan Coogler has added two more villains to the mix. Of those, one is Serkis reprising his Avengers: Age of Ultron role. Having played Black Panther villain Ulysses Klaue, it’s hardly surprising that the Lord of the Rings actor is returning. TheWrap broke the news about Serkis’ return, after they followed up on a casting scoop by Variety.
They suggest that M’Baku/Man-Ape will be a thorn in T’Challa’s paw. Person of Interest star Winston Duke will appear as the third villain in the film, after Serkis and Michael B. Jordan’s Eric Killmonger. That does sound a little like an overload of bad guys, more than we were led to believe. After Lupita Nyong’o was cast as Nakia, she gave us a brief synopsis:
“The story of this Black Panther – what I am allowed to say – is that Black Panther’s leadership has been threatened by two foes who come together, and so Black Panther gets the help of the C.I.A. and the Dora Milaje to try and defeat the enemy.”
Could those two foes now be three? Given the status of Michael B Jordan, plus his relationship with Ryan Coogler, expect him to be the main threat.
The standalone Black Panther isn’t too far away now. It’s set for release in less than 18 months, as it hits theatres on February 16, 2018.
