Ewan McGregor, who played young Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars prequels, was asked by J.J. Abrams to reprise his role for a brief one liner in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
While on The Graham Norton Show, McGregor was questioned about his role during the film. “I recorded a small bit. It was ‘Rey… something’,” he replied. Shamelessly admitting he had forgotten his line, the crowd howled with laughter at the sight of McGregor’s struggle to remember.
After being reminded of the line by Norton, McGregor then discussed the process Abrams took to record the line using bits from the original Obi-Wan, Sir Alec Guinness, mixed with his own voice.
“They recorded me saying it and then they found Alec Guinness saying ‘afraid’ – and they took the ‘af’ and the ‘d’ out of it and they kept the ‘rey’ bit. So it’s him saying ‘Rey’ and then me saying that other line you said.”
McGregor then recalled how he came to appear in the film.
“JJ Abrams emailed me out of the blue – he got my email address from someone and then emailed me. It was about two weeks before the film was released, so it was obviously sort of last minute.”

Though last minute, it gave fans everywhere a brief moment of nostalgia and raised the question, with Obi-Wan reaching out to Rey, could this be a hint at the return of Obi-Wan Kenobi in the upcoming Episode VIII? If so, the return of a cloaked McGregor would surely be welcomed with fanfare. Let’s just hope he doesn’t forget his lines.
Star Wars Episode VIII is scheduled to release December 15, 2017.
