As Deadpool hit our screens and quickly established itself as the dark horse of superheroes, its success has immediately sparked talks of a potential crossover with the other 20th Century Fox property, X-Men.
Widely considered the king of the X-Men franchise, Singer has been directly involved in most of the nine films over its 16-year history. Speaking with ComicBook.com, he outlined some of the challenges that will inevitably arise when combining such different tonal characters and universes.
âIf you take a character as irreverent and meta as Deadpool and connect him to something as grounded and serious as X-Men, you have to do it carefully and gently. When you drop them all in together it can be a disaster. That has to be done delicately, but thereâs plenty of room to do it.â
This concern doesn’t come as much of a surprise to fans of both films, as one of the more appealing aspects of Deadpool was its R-rated violence, matched with the constant and entertaining break of the fourth wall. X-Men is also currently undergoing a vast change, as it works towards replacing the older, more established actors with the new intake of younger mutants — not to mention, in a timeline currently set in the 1980s.
As the next X-Men is film set to take place in the 1990s, it seems 20th Century Fox is trying to bring them back into the current day, with each film jumping forward a decade. It can also help them establish an X-Force movie, which would reunite Deadpool with Cable, Wolverine, Psylocke, and Angel.
As for now, fans can eagerly await the release of X-Men: Apocalypse as Deadpool 2 enters pre-production. Either way, it seems Singer and the rest of the team are certainly planning for the eventual team-up.
What do you think of the crossover? Would you like to see Deadpool fight alongside Professor X et al?
