We’ve known about the cast for a while, but now director Jonathan Entwistle has confirmed the start of production by sharing the slate for Karate Kid:

There’s also a photo of the slate with new lead Ben Wang (American-Born Chinese):

https://twitter.com/CultureCrave/status/1775417879921598811

Not only will this movie be bringing back the OG Karate Kid Ralph Macchio, but the story will also be bringing into canon the 2010 Karate Kid which starred Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan. Though a lot of fans like to argue that KK2010 is more of Kung Fu Kid than Karate Kid, it did have its good amount of fans and it will probably tug at some nostalgia for adult Gen-Z audiences.

As for Cobra Kai fans, show creators Jon Hurwitz, John Heald, and Hayden Schlossberg may not be directly involved, but it was reported that they have given their notes to the scripts for the film, and show their full support to the director.

Personally, I’d love for there to be more appearances from Cobra Kai regulars like Billy Zabka (Johnny Lawrence) and Xolo Mariduena (Miguel Diaz), but I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. Heck, I’d be happy to see Jaden Smith make a cameo.

Karate Kid is set to hit theatres this coming Dec. 13.

American Born Chinese Star Cast as the Next Karate Kid https://www.geekfeed.com/hinese-star-cast-as-the-next-karate-kid/ Wed, 14 Feb 2024 10:41:18 +0000 https://www.geekfeed.com/?p=81058 Cobra Kai had introduced to us a new generation of Karate Kids with Xolo Mariduena, but now Sony is ready to once again bring the franchise to a new generation of kids, and they’ve found their new “Daniel-san”.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ben Wang, who is the star of Disney+’s American Born Chinese is going to star in the next Karate Kid movie with Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio reprising their roles from their respective Karate Kid franchises.

As for Wang, he managed to stand out from thousands of entries which came from around the world, and he was said to have had a great audition that showed some deep connection to his character. It also helps that he’s already trained in several forms of martial arts including kung fu, taekwando, and karate, and he’s also fluent in Mandarin.

We don’t have a full breakdown of the story yet, but it’s said that the new Karate Kid will be taking place in the East Coast this time, and Wang will be playing a teen from China who will find their direction via the discipline of martial arts from one or two senseis.

Personally, I’m just hoping we get some kind of reference to Cobra Kai, because that show is mainly responsible for rejuvenating interest in the franchise for the past few years. Not only did they manage to introduce some new kids, but they also managed to toe the line with nostalgia that didn’t feel too pander-y to fans.

The next Karate Kid movie is expected to release in theaters Dec. 13, 2024.

Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio Teaming Up For New Karate Kid Movie https://www.geekfeed.com/jackie-chan-and-macchio-new-karate-kid-movie/ Thu, 23 Nov 2023 16:26:27 +0000 https://www.geekfeed.com/?p=79799 The Karate Kid films had been a defining cult franchise of the 80s and has seen several revivals; once with Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith back in 2010, and another more recent attempt with Cobra Kai. With the success of the latter on streaming,  it looks like Karate Kid is ready to make a comeback on the big screen—and we could have another ‘multiverse’ situation in our hands.

As announced by Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan, they will be teaming up for a new Karate Kid film, and the search is on for a new lead. Here’s the announcement:

Though a lot of fans will attest that Xolo Mariduena was the new Karate Kid of Cobra Kai, even those kids have managed to grow up over the years, and it’s time for Gen Alpha to get their own martial arts idol.

We don’t have any details of the story yet, but fans are hoping that the movie will take into consideration the events of Cobra Kai. Of course, we also shouldn’t forget that the 2010 Karate Kid would also have its own fans, counting that the movie did make bank at the box office.

It is curious why it didn’t get a sequel though.

Seeing as a lot of fans did love Cobra Kai, it is kind of disappointing that the creators Jon Hurwitz, John Heald, and Hayden Schlossberg won’t be directly involved in the making of the film Gizmodo does report that they have seen the scripts and given their notes; plus they give director Jonathan Entwistle (The End of the F**king World) their full support.

Now who do we talk to to confirm that William Zabka a.k.a. Johnny Lawrence is also in the movie?

The next Karate Kid movie is expected to come out Dec. 13, 2024.

Xolo Mariduena is Blue Beetle in Leaked Set Photos https://www.geekfeed.com/xolo-mariduena-is-blue-beetle-in-leaked-set-photos/ Mon, 30 May 2022 13:25:57 +0000 https://www.geekfeed.com/?p=65385 After his success with Cobra Kai, Xolo Mariduena has signed on for HBO Max’s Blue Beetle movie—which is now making the jump to the big screen. We don’t have an official look at the film yet, but some leaked photos from Just Jared have revealed Mariduena wearing the alien suit.

Check these out:

https://twitter.com/NebsGoodTakes/status/1529553374647050242

While there have been several incarnations of Blue Beetle in the comics, this one will be based on Jaime Reyes who was introduced back in the Infinite Crisis storyline. In the comics, Reyes is granted powers by an alien suit, becoming the Blue Beetle.

The costume in the set looks pretty close to what we got in the comics, but I think the head looks a bit large. If anything, I think they could be editing the entire thing with CGI to make it look smaller, but I guess the suit already works from a practical standpoint.

What I’m wondering is if they’re going to give Blue Beetle a mouth, because it might work with animation and comics, but I think it would look a bit freaky in live-action. On the other hand, not having a mouth on the costume kind of makes the character look like a blue Spawn/Deadpool.

The movie is set for a 2023 release, so it’s going to be a while before we get an official look from WB. In the meantime, we do have several other properties to watch out for like Aquaman 2, The Flash, and the Batgirl solo film.

Blue Beetle hits theaters on Aug. 17, 2023.

Cobra Kai Season 5 Gets New Trailer and Release Date https://www.geekfeed.com/cobra-kai-season-5-gets-new-trailer-and-release-date/ Sun, 08 May 2022 13:41:49 +0000 https://www.geekfeed.com/?p=65136 The Karate Kid saga continues on Netflix as the hit show Cobra Kai is set to return with its fifth season later this year. Just in, we got a new trailer for Cobra Kai 5 has been released, and we also get a premiere date.

Watch this:

Here’s the official trailer:

Following the shocking results of the All Valley Tournament, Terry Silver is expanding the Cobra Kai empire and trying to make his “No Mercy” style of karate the only game in town. With Kreese behind bars and Johnny Lawrence setting karate aside to focus on repairing the damage he’s caused, Daniel LaRusso must call on an old friend for help.

Though the show had started as a fun reversal of the Karate Kid formula with the Cobra’s coming out to be the underdogs, it looks like we’re back where everything was before—with Miyagi-Do having to come up against a growing and well-established Cobra Kai. I guess one main difference is that Johnny Lawrence and Danny LaRusso are now on the same team.

Though Robby had spent most of the show antagonistic towards his father, it looks like the two will now be teaming up to find a missing Miguel Diaz. Hopefully the fate of the valley can still be saved with the power of some righteous karate.

Sequel/Reboots are coming out as the norm with franchises these days, but Cobra Kai has managed to shine as being a show that perfectly walks the balance of fan service and genuine character development. Hopefully it doesn’t overstay it’s welcome though.

Cobra Kai Season 5 comes back to Netflix on Sept. 9.

Blue Beetle Casts Sharon Stone as Main Antagonist https://www.geekfeed.com/blue-beetle-casts-sharon-stone-as-main-antagonist/ Wed, 30 Mar 2022 15:31:18 +0000 https://www.geekfeed.com/?p=64643 It looks like Sharon Stone is once again playing another DC antagonist.

Variety reports that Stone is in talks to play the villain in DCEU’s Blue Beetle movie starring Xolo Maridueña. She is set to play the villain Victoria Kord that has been created for the movie—but I suspect that this could be a rewrite of an established villain from the comics.

Back in 2004, Stone actually played opposite Halle Berry in the Catwoman movie where she played a cosmetic company owner that was looking to peddle an anti-aging cream that had a horrible secret. Almost 20 years later, Stone is going to be coming back to comic book movies, but this time she’ll be going up against Miguel from Cobra Kai.

Besides Stone and Maridueña, the movie’s cast also includes Bruna Marquezine, Belissa Escobedo, and Harvey Guillen.

Originally, Blue Beetle was announced as a movie for HBO Max, but it was then revealed that it would be releasing in theaters. We don’t know what that means officially, but it could be a hint that WB suddenly has faith for this movie. Too bad we can’t say the same thing about Batgirl, which is still expected to debut exclusively on HBO Max. With Barbara Gordon being an established character and Batman all the rage right now, you would think that they would give Batgirl a chance to thrive in cinemas.

With a release set for 2023, maybe we can get an update on Blue Beetle before the year ends. After the delay of Aquaman 2 and The Flash, DC has to market what they could.

Blue Beetle is set to hit theaters on Aug. 18, 2023.

Training is On in New Clip from Cobra Kai Season 4 https://www.geekfeed.com/training-is-on-in-new-clip-from-cobra-kai-season-4/ Sat, 01 Jan 2022 02:33:45 +0000 https://www.geekfeed.com/?p=63227 The third season of Cobra Kai had ended with Johnny and Danny fusing their dojos (Eagle Fang and Miyagi-Do) into one, and we’re going to spend the fourth season watching the two senseis mix their teaching styles. Now we have a new clip from Season 4 with Johnny once again trying out his unconventional training methods.

Watch the trailer for the fourth season of Cobra Kai:

With Johnny and Danny spending most of the show being at odds with each other, this will be the first time we actually see them team up to achieve a common goal. Though Danny’s clean-cut method seemed fine, it still lost to Johnny’s Cobra Kai way back in the first season. Even if he seems to be making it up as he goes, you have to love watching Johnny train his students and somehow shine as a teacher who truly cares.

We don’t know how long Cobra Kai is meant to run, but the show has been doing great with mixing nostalgia and presenting us with a new batch of Karate Kids. Hopefully it ends at the right time, rather than overstay its welcome like several other shows before it.

Season 4 finds the Miyagi-Do and Eagle Fang dojos joining forces to take down Cobra Kai at the All Valley Under 18 Karate Tournament… and whoever loses must hang up their gi. As Samantha and Miguel try to maintain the dojo alliance and Robby goes all in at Cobra Kai, the fate of the Valley has never been more precarious. What tricks does Kreese have up his sleeve? Can Daniel and Johnny bury their decades-long hatchet to defeat Kreese? Or will Cobra Kai become the face of karate in the valley?

Catch Cobra Kai 4 when it comes back on Netflix on Dec. 31.

DC’s Blue Beetle No Longer HBO Max Exclusive https://www.geekfeed.com/dcs-blue-beetle-no-longer-hbo-max-exclusive/ Mon, 27 Dec 2021 15:12:05 +0000 https://www.geekfeed.com/?p=62989 Cobra Kai star Xolo Maridueña is set to play the lead role of Blue Beetle for HBO Max, but it looks like the movie won’t be hitting the streaming service anymore—instead it’s going to get a theatrical release.

As per Variety, Blue Beetle is now set to hit theaters, and is aiming to come out on Aug. 18, 2023. This will be the first DC project that was originally announced for streaming, but then upgraded for a theatrical release. One can’t help but wonder if the same could be done for Batgirl—who is no doubt the more popular character.

Maridueña will be playing the Jaime Reyes incarnation of the Blue Beetle, who was created by Keith Giffen, John Rogers, and Cully Hamner; and introduced in Infinite Crisis. In the comics, Jaime finds a Blue Beetle scarab that grants him an extraterrestrial suit of armor.

For a while rumors were circulating that the movie was going to be a buddy-cop film with BB and Booster Gold; but for now, it looks like this film is going to be a solo outing. Then again, Booster could prove for a great foil character for Jaime, starting out as an opportunist from the future to an actual hero of the present.

Going back to Maridueña, he’s proven himself as a solid protagonist with Cobra Kai, being able to switch between action star and timid nerd with ease. It’s going to be great to watch him take the spotlight, and based on the theatrical upgrade, WB could have some real faith in this movie.

Catch Blue Beetle when it hits theaters on Aug. 18, 2023. Catch Mariduena when Cobra Kai returns to Netflix on Dec. 31.

Cobra Kai Season 4 Trailer Sees Rise of Eagle Fang https://www.geekfeed.com/cobra-kai-season-4-trailer-sees-rise-of-eagle-fang/ Sat, 11 Dec 2021 08:15:58 +0000 https://www.geekfeed.com/?p=62869 After three seasons of rivalries, Johnny Lawrence and Daniel LaRusso are finally working together in Cobra Kai, and the fourth season is set to premiere on Netflix this coming New Year’s Eve. Just in, we have a new trailer, and it amps up the karate drama between Kreese’s Cobra Kai with Johnny and Danny’s Eagle Fang.

Watch the trailer down here:

The official description reads:

Season 4 finds the Miyagi-Do and Eagle Fang dojos joining forces to take down Cobra Kai at the All Valley Under 18 Karate Tournament… and whoever loses must hang up their gi. As Samantha and Miguel try to maintain the dojo alliance and Robby goes all in at Cobra Kai, the fate of the Valley has never been more precarious. What tricks does Kreese have up his sleeve? Can Daniel and Johnny bury their decades-long hatchet to defeat Kreese? Or will Cobra Kai become the face of karate in the valley?

While the has been careful in picking out its references from the Karate Kid films, this fourth season will be bringing back Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith), a friend of Kreese and a former teacher of Danny. We don’t know what the Silver/Kreese tandem is going to do to the current students, but it’s going to be interesting to watch Danny and Johnny put their differences aside and champion their own karate philosophy.

Though some shows get lost between nostaligia and introducing something new to audiences, the show manages to maintain a perfect balance of old and new; even commenting on the dangers of staying in your ‘glory days.’ We don’t know where this story is going to end, but showrunners Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg have been doing great so far.

Catch Cobra Kai 4 when it comes to Netflix on Dec. 31.

Netflix’s TUDUM Event Promises Looks at Cowboy Bebop, Sandman, and More https://www.geekfeed.com/netflixs-tudum-event-promises-looks-at-cowboy-bebop-sandman-and-more/ Fri, 24 Sep 2021 13:53:21 +0000 https://www.geekfeed.com/?p=61648 Fans are still reacting to the big reveals in Nintendo’s 2021 showcase, but Netflix is already gearing up for their big virtual event this coming Saturday.

Take a look at TUDUM 2021:

Here’s the official description:

On September 25, Netflix’s biggest stars and creators from around the world will join the virtual stage for an exciting day full of exclusives and first-looks. It’s our first ever global TUDUM event, and our goal is simple: to entertain and honor Netflix fans from across the globe.

Over 70 films and series will be featured throughout the three-hour event – including some of our most popular returning seasons like Stranger Things, Bridgerton and The Witcher, La Casa De Papel and Cobra Kai, as well as blockbuster films like Red Notice, Don’t Look Up, Extraction, The Harder They Fall, The Old Guard and more.

Besides the titles in the description, we should also expect our first reveals for Netflix adaptations of Cowboy Bebop and Sandman. While Netflix has had a reputation for botching anime adaptations, that hasn’t really stopped them from trying time and again.

I wonder when we’re going to get our first look at the live-action One Piece?

With DC, Disney, and every other huge game brand hosting their own virtual events, it was only high time before Netflix decided they could just have their own showcase. Hopefully this doesn’t mean that they won’t be showcasing anything in the bigger cons in the future like the San Diego Comic-Con.

Catch TUDUM when it launches Sept. 25.

Cobra Kai Renewed for a Fifth Season https://www.geekfeed.com/cobra-kai-renewed-for-a-fifth-season/ Mon, 30 Aug 2021 15:29:36 +0000 https://www.geekfeed.com/?p=61234 Fans are still eager to find out what happens to the coalition between Miyagi-Do and Eagle Fang with the upcoming season of Cobra Kai, but it looks like Netflix has jumped the gun and has renewed the show for a fifth season.

Here’s the season 5 announcement:

We don’t know what to expect with this fifth season yet, Season 4 is still a complete mystery to us. After bringing back John Kreese and eventually having him take over Cobra Kai from Johnny, the fourth season is going to feature the return of Karate Kid Part III villain Terry Silver. Is Silver going to take over Cobra Kai for himself? Or is he going to be teaming up with Kreese to play dirty against Johnny and Danny?

Ever since Cobra Kai landed on Netflix, the show has been applauded for its meta critique on nostalgia and the dangers of dwelling in it for too long. The show makes fantastic callbacks to the original era of Karate Kid while at the same time giving us genuine character arcs for the likes of Danny and Johnny. Not to mention they also give the kids their own meaningful journeys, and we get to watch them have their own struggles as their teachers try hard not to lose themselves in their rivalries.

Though a fifth season sounds great, I’m hoping that showrunners Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg have a solid idea on how to end the series before it starts feeling stale.

Cobra Kai Season 4 premieres on Netflix this December.

Cobra Kai Star in Talks to Play DC’s Blue Beetle https://www.geekfeed.com/cobra-kai-star-in-talks-to-play-dcs-blue-beetle/ Wed, 04 Aug 2021 15:29:28 +0000 https://www.geekfeed.com/?p=60892 DC is currently taking baby steps when it comes to bringing their biggest heroes back to the big screen, but they seem to be pushing harder for the release of lesser-known properties on HBO Max. After news of Leslie Grace nabbing the Batgirl role, news has come out that they’re looking at a Cobra Kai star to be the live-action Blue Beetle.

According to The Wrap, Xolo Maridueña is now in talks to play lead Jaime Reyes for the Blue Beetle film. The movie is set to come out on HBO Max and will be directed by Charm City Kings helmer Angel Manuel Soto.

While Blue Beetle has had several iterations in the comics, this version is based on a more recent incarnation that came out in 2006. Created by Keith Giffen, John Rogers, and Cully Hamner, Jaime Reyes was introduced during the Infinite Crisis crossover event and has since been one of the more prominent versions of the character. In the comics, Jaime finds a Blue Beetle scarab that gave him a suit of extraterrestrial armor.

If you haven’t checked out Cobra Kai, Maridueña plays the role of Miguel Diaz, a bullied kid who takes up karate from ex-Cobra Kai champion Johnny Lawrence. While the story does feature original Karate Kid characters, Miguel is considered to be this generation’s Danny LaRusso, and has proven to be an endearing character despite working for the “bad” dojo. If Blue Beetle should push through, Maridueña would definitely be a solid choice for a lead.

For now, no release date has been set for Blue Beetle. Catch Maridueña in the fourth season of Cobra Kai which is set to hit Netflix sometime later this year.
