Release Date: July 24, 2020

Director: N/A

Screenwriter(s): David S. Goyer and Justin Rhodes

Cast: N/A

Story: Once news of the film’s screenwriters hit, so too did a tease of the narrative being crafted. Apparently, Goyer and Rhodes are aiming for Lethal Weapon in space. “Conceived by Goyer and [Geoff] Johns,” the story is set to emphasize the relationship between Hal Jordan, John Stewart and the Corps. This particular emphasis seems to explain the Lethal Weapon vibe WB is shooting for. An older and experienced Hal Jordan could possibly be teamed with a new recruit like John Stewart, or vice versa. Furthermore, Green Lantern Corps is being “based on a comic book” origin story; might the Lanterns’ introduction to the DCEU fall in line with something like Man of Steel?

Rumor and Speculation: While no director is currently at the helm, WB purportedly eyed George Miller (Fury Road) at one point. Surprisingly, not a lot details, rumored or otherwise, have surfaced about the film. But a Green Lantern will allegedly have a brief guest appearance in Justice League. If so, the character’s DCEU debut could mirror that of Aquaman, The Flash, and Cyborg.

Rumors keep cropping up for the GL feature. A recent one states Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) was in talks to helm the project. Said rumor was quickly debunked by an industry insider after it hit, but, as always, anything’s possible. This same report also claimed to have details on character descriptions for Hal and John, which can be read below:

“Hal Jordan: Caucasian, 39 – 50. A former military test pilot, he is now a veteran of the Green Lantern Corps.

“John Stewart: African- American male, 21 – 30. Prior to joining the Green Lantern Corp, he was a sniper in the military.”

Whether or not these descriptions should be cast aside with the Rupert Wyatt reports remains to be seen. But they sound real enough, based on what we know to be true about how the two character’s will be portrayed on screen. That said, it should all still be taken with a grain of salt.

NEXT: Brace yourselves, we’re now entering uncharted territory. The following films don’t even have rumored release windows or only exist in cursory announcements. In fact, don’t be surprised if some of them never see the light of day… or the blackest night. For the sake of crafting a sense of organization, they’ll be ordered by the date in which they were announced.

As a quick aside, Wonder Woman 2’s official date has been added. Details on her next standalone can be found here.
