The CW Casts its New Live-Action Powerpuff Girls

Back in August, news had come out that The CW was working on a Powerpuff Girls reboot which would bring a dark, teen twist on Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup. What’s interesting is, it looks like the show has finally found its main stars.

As per Variety, the new Powerpuff Girls will be Chloe Bennet (Blossom), Dove Cameron (Bubbles), and Yana Perrault. Bennet and Cameron had actually been co-stars with Agents of SHIELD, and it looks like Perrault is going to be the newcomer of the cast; that being said, Perrault has had a career on Broadway and was even set to join the cast of Hamilton before the production was shut down.

We don’t have any official synopsis on the series yet, but we do have some (admittedly dark) character descriptions. Blossom actually holds several advanced degrees, but her superhero trauma has left her feeling ‘anxious and reclusive,”; Bubbles still has that charming exterior, and is more interested in recapturing her fame rather than actual world-saving; and Buttercup is apparently trying to live an anonymous life and reject her superhero past.

Here was the description of the show back in August:

In the updated version of the series, the titular superheroes are now disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime-fighting. Will they agree to reunite now that the world needs them more than ever?

Admittedly, the premise is too edgy for my taste, but if they managed to make Riverdale work, I’m sure showrunners Diablo Cody and Heather Regnier can pull off the same hat trick with a property like The Powerpuff Girls.

No release date has been set for The Powerpuff Girls yet, but catch it on The CW sometime soon.
