Recent reports suggest Shazam! is the DCEU entry next in line to begin filming. Warner Bros. remains silent on the matter, but there’s finally a confirmation from someone certainly in the know. According the the film’s director, David F. Sandberg, Shazam! is indeed next up to bat. What that means for the DCEU release slate following Aquaman’s December 2018 launch is unknown.

Talking to Film Riot (via, Sandberg also revealed the script is complete. “There’s a script […] It’s the next DC movie to shoot.” This news indicates Sandberg knows in which direction he’ll be taking the source material. With his first appearance dating back to 1940, there are plenty of Captain Marvel/Shazam stories to come through. For Sandberg then, there’s no shortage of inspiration to pull from:

I’m taking it all in. Some of those really old ones are quite fun, when he’s, like, fighting Hitler. Stuff like that. No, cause he’s been around since the 40s for, like, as long as Superman. So there’s a lot to read and that’s also interesting because he sort of has a couple of different origin stories or a couple of different takes on it. You know, you have the most recent sort of Geoff Johns version and then you have Ordwell version and then you have those really old versions.

The last major Shazam announcement told of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s Black Adam being absent. That wasn’t always the case, though. Now, says Sandberg, the attention will be geared towards Shazam himself.

There’ve been variations of the script, like before I came along, where… you know, variations where Black Adam was in and out and, you know. But now, this is about Shazam.
