Star Wars: The Last Jedi came out as one of the most successful movies of 2017, and it seems that Lucasfilm is really happy with what director Rian Johnson has to offer—even handing him the reins to start his own trilogy. Apparently, work for it has already begun, though it is taking its time.

Talking to Empire, Johnson’s producing partner Ram Bergman explains:

“We’ve started. Slowly, slowly, but we’ve started. Hopefully, soon we’re going to get busier.”

Rian Johnson has admitted that he still doesn’t have a concrete idea on what his trilogy is going to be, but he has said that it will focus on entirely new characters in an era of Star Wars ‘that we’ve never seen before.’

Though I am cautious about straying away from the main story of Star Wars, I’m hoping that Rian Johnson comes up with new characters and setpieces that will be as memorable and timeless as the original trilogy’s. After all, he has an entire galaxy to be his sandbox.

We don’t know when Johnson’s trilogy will release, but some guess that we could be getting the first installment by 2021—what with Episode IX coming out in 2019 and possibly another anthology film the year after.

I guess we’ll just have to wait.

No official release date has been announced for Rian Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy.
