Michael Bay had bowed out of the Transformers franchise with Last Knight, and last month saw the first spinoff come out in the form of Travis Knight’s Bumblebee. The movie has actually gotten a lot of praise from fans of the classic G-1 show, and sequel has reportedly been approved by Paramount.

The news comes from Deadline who says that the Bumblebee follow up has been greenlit by the studio. We don’t have any specifics on the story, but it’s very likely that this movie will pick up right where the first one left off, with Bumblebee and Optimus Prime awaiting the arrival of more robots on Earth.

Producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura had this to say about Bumblebee:

“We had many objectives (including) to bring a new set of families into the series, and that succeeded; in the aftermarkets that will continue to succeed in a big way. Part of our obligation was to bring people back who had left the franchise or never experienced it which worked well… We are finding our way. Our intention was we wanted to please the core fans but also bring a new audience.”

Though I liked the film, and I’m all up for a sequel, I was kind of hoping that they would release a movie that had no humans and was all about the Transformers. There’s been news that an animated film in the franchise is in the works, and I’m hoping that this will be the one to bring us to the war on Cybertron. I know audiences need human characters to identify with, but I think that the Autobots and Decepticons have enough personality to bring some emotional weight to the movie.

But who knows? Maybe Travis Knight already has an idea on where the franchise is going. Hopefully it doesn’t need to lead up to the original Bay films. Maybe they can introduce some alternate timeline like they did with 2009’s Star Trek?

Catch Bumblebee in theaters today.
