It had taken a lot of effort to get a new adaptation from Disney+, and it looks like the House of Mouse is ready for more.

As per Variety, Disney has decided to renew Percy Jackson and the Olympians for a second season. The show had garnered a lot of great reviews from critics, and has accrued over 110 million hours streamed across Hulu and Disney+.

For now, it’s expected that the show will adapt one book in the series for each season, with the first covering the events of The Lightning Thief. With the second season, we’re expected to jump into the story of Sea of Monsters.

With the Percy Jackson movie franchise failing to take off on the box office, fans are certainly excited to see more of this adaptation continue. Let’s hope Disney has enough faith in the project to allow the team to complete the entire story creator Rick Riordan wants to tell.

Percy Jackson & The Olympians tells the fantastical story of a 12-year-old modern demigod, Percy Jackson, who’s just coming to terms with his newfound supernatural powers when the sky god Zeus accuses him of stealing his master lightning bolt. Now Percy must trek across America to find it and restore order to Olympus.

Catch the first season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians now streaming on Disney+ and Hulu.

Percy Must Find the Lightning Thief in Official Trailer for Percy Jackson and the Olympians https://www.geekfeed.com/official-trailer-percy-jackson-and-the-olympians/ Fri, 17 Nov 2023 17:09:10 +0000 https://www.geekfeed.com/?p=79712 HBO may be gearing up to reboot Harry Potter soon, but Disney+ is going to be delivering Gen-Z’s version of Potter with Percy Jackson and the Olympians. The show is set to be a big drop for the holiday season, and we just got a full first trailer.

Check this out:

Percy Jackson & The Olympians tells the fantastical story of a 12-year-old modern demigod, Percy Jackson, who’s just coming to terms with his newfound supernatural powers when the sky god Zeus accuses him of stealing his master lightning bolt. Now Percy must trek across America to find it and restore order to Olympus.

The first season is expected to cover the events of the first book in Rick Riordan’s series called Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. We should expect further seasons to also each tackle one novel at a time. Other books in the series are titled The Sea of Monsters, The Titan’s Curse, The Battle of the Labyrinth, The Last Olympian—all culminating to the last book The Chalice of the Gods.

We don’t know how closely the film will be sticking to the books, but with Riordan’s involvement, we should expect a pretty faithful adaptation. If anything, they’re expected to remedy all the faults of the original films, which kind of left out all the interesting parts of Riordan’s modern Olympians and favored action setpieces.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians comes to Disney+ on Dec. 20.

First Look at Zeus’ Lightning Bolt in Percy Jackson and the Olympians https://www.geekfeed.com/zeus-in-percy-jackson-and-the-olympians/ Tue, 10 Oct 2023 10:07:08 +0000 https://www.geekfeed.com/?p=79132 This December will see Disney+ releasing their reboot of the Percy Jackson franchise, and a lot of fans have been comparing the new things to what has come before.

Just in, Disney has dropped a new motion poster and it gives us a look at what could be Zeus’ Master Bolt. Check this out:

For context, the Lightning Bolt serves as the McGuffin for the first book, Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. It would become Percy’s job to locate the bolt after it’s stolen, and return it to Zeus (who is played by the late Lance Reddick in the series).

Here’s the scene from the first film which has Zeus and Poseidon fighting over it:

While the prop for the original film looked like a literal lightning bolt, it does seem that the bolt here is given more of a form, with a handle for Percy to hold on to. This is actually more accurate to the book description of the weapon which is said to be a Celestial Bronze cylinder, 2 ft.-long, capped a both ends with electrical explosives.

It’s also described to be so powerful that it would make ‘mortal hydrogen bombs look like firecrackers’ so at least we have that Oppenheimer reference.

If anything, we should expect the bolt to appear in further seasons of the series, but it’s going to be too bad that we won’t have Reddick to wield it. Then again, a second season of the show hasn’t been greenlit yet, so we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.

Watch out for Percy Jackson and the Olympians when it premieres on Dec. 20 on Disney+.

Enter Camp Half-Blood in New Teaser for Percy Jackson and the Olympians https://www.geekfeed.com/new-teaser-for-percy-jackson-and-the-olympians/ Fri, 22 Sep 2023 12:28:07 +0000 https://www.geekfeed.com/?p=78835 WB may be looking to reboot the Harry Potter universe as a series, but Disney has pushed forward with the Gen-Z equivalent of the Potter IP. Percy Jackson and the Olympians is set to premiere this December, and we have a new teaser giving us a look at Percy’s unique world of gods and monsters.

Check this out:

20th Century Fox had tried to launch the Percy Jackson franchise as a series of films back in the 2010s, and they even brought in Potter director Chris Columbus to take the helm. Sadly, the IP didn’t get past two movies; but now author Rick Riordan is more involved, and he’s teamed up with Disney for what he assures is a more accurate depiction of Percy’s story.

So far, everything does pretty faithful to the book. With the story expanded to a series, there’s just a lot more places to go and more time to spend with the characters—compared to the movies which had to cut a lot of sequences for the running time.

Hopefully the series manages to take off this time and get a new generation of audiences into the world of Percy.

The Gods are Waiting in Latest Teaser for Percy Jackson & The Olympians https://www.geekfeed.com/latest-teaser-for-percy-jackson-the-olympians/ Thu, 24 Aug 2023 04:01:15 +0000 https://www.geekfeed.com/?p=78347 The Percy Jackson franchise may have fizzled out in the box office, but Disney+ is trying again with a new batch of actors and series author Rick Riordan onboard. The show is set to premiere later this year, and Disney has just dropped a new teaser featuring the trio of Percy, Annabeth, and Grover, as well as the god Ares.

Check this out:

Admittedly, it’s not an expansive look at the show, but with a release date set for December, it should be a while before Disney really gives us an in-depth trailer (no doubt they’ll have to work on a lot of VFX for the series).

Though Ares is the only god that appears in the teaser, we should expect an appearance from other members of the Greek pantheon like Dionysus, Hephaestus, Hermes, Poseidon, and Zeus. The story also features all kinds of creatures from Greek mythology like Medusa, Chrion, and a bunch of harpies.

Some fans are curious though, since the actor cast as Zeus, Lance Reddick, had died earlier this year. It would probably be beneficial for the show to recast his part before the premiere, but it was said that he did finish his work on the first season, and it would be great if fans could have seen one of his final performances.

Disney Rebooting Eragon for Live-Action https://www.geekfeed.com/disney-rebooting-eragon-for-live-action/ Wed, 27 Jul 2022 05:33:39 +0000 https://www.geekfeed.com/?p=70260 20th Century Fox had tried and failed to get an Eragon franchise off the ground back in 2006, and just like with the Percy Jackson series, it looks like Disney+ is going to try again.

According to Variety, a live-action Eragon series is currently in development at Disney, and the author of the books Christopher Paolini, has been assigned to co-write the show.

Eragon is the first of four books in The Inheritance Cycle and the story is described:

“The Inheritance Cycle” tells the story of a farmboy named Eragon who discovers an egg that hatches into a dragon he names Saphira. Through their bond and the help of his mentor Brom, Eragon learns to be a Dragon Rider, an ancient order that had long been thought to be wiped out by the evil king Galbatorix. Eragon and Saphira set out to defeat Galbatorix and free the land of Alagaësia from his tyranny.

Despite riding off the fantasy high of the Lord of the Rings movies, the series failed to capture the imaginations of audiences, and Fox put an end to the franchise with the first movie. We don’t know what Disney is planning to do with their reboot yet, but with Paolini onboard, hopefully we can get an adaptation that manages to successfully get a new generation of kids into the world of Alagaesia.

If you asked me, I would have preferred the spectacle of a film, but I guess a series does allow for better development of characters. I guess if the adults have Game of Thrones, maybe the series can provide a dragon show that whole families can actually watch together.

No release date has been set for Disney’s Eragon adaptation.

Disney+’s Percy Jackson Series Announces New Cast Members https://www.geekfeed.com/disneys-percy-jackson-series-announces-new-cast-members/ Mon, 06 Jun 2022 15:16:05 +0000 https://www.geekfeed.com/?p=65490 While Disney’s Percy Jackson series has already found its principal trio, there is still the case of the different characters that Percy interacts with. Just in, Disney has revealed who else will be filling up this world of the Olympians.

According to Variety, Megan Mullally, Jason Mantzoukas, Glynn Turnman, Virgina Kull, and Timm Sharp have joined the cast of Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

Kull will be playing the part of Percy’s mother with Sharp being cast as Gabe, Percy’s stepfather. Mullally has been cast as Mrs. Dodds, who is Percy’s literally monstrous Math teacher; while Turnman will be playing Percy’s centaur mentor Mr. Brunner who introduces him to Camp Half-Blood—which will be run by Dionysus (played by Mantzoukas).

There’s a bunch of other characters we don’t know about yet. Besides the gods themselves who have not been cast, there are also other characters in mythology that Percy, Grover, and Annabeth run into on their journey. If the supporting cast is already this great, I hope they manage to land some great talent to play the more colourful roles in the series.

For now, production has already begun for the show, which means we could get a premiere sometime next year. Fingers crossed we won’t have to wait until 2023 to get our first teaser though. With so much hype behind this series, you’d think Disney would want to market it pretty well.

No release date has been set for Percy Jackson and the Olympians, but you can watch out for it on Disney+.

Disney Officially Greenlights Percy Jackson and the Olympians https://www.geekfeed.com/disney-officially-greenlights-percy-jackson-and-the-olympians/ Wed, 26 Jan 2022 15:57:00 +0000 https://www.geekfeed.com/?p=63655 20th Century Fox has tried and failed, and now Disney is going to take a stab at the world of Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

In an official message from Rick Riordan, he confirms that Disney has given the greenlight for the Percy Jackson series, and we’ll be seeing the show on Disney+ very soon. Here’s the announcement:

Riordan also announces that James Bobin, who had directed the pilot for Disney’s The Mysterious Benedict Society, will also be directing the pilot for Percy Jackson.

If the Millenials had Harry Potter then Gen-Z had Riordan’s Percy Jackson books. The story follows Percy Jackson who discovers that he’s the son of the god Poseidon; granting him special powers and an admission into “Camp Half-Blood”. From that point Percy is thrust into the modern world of Greek mythology where he runs into monsters and other gods who have found ways to exist in the today’s world.

Though 20th Century Fox had released two movies based on the books, they kind of dropped a lot of elements that made the original interesting. Hopefully now with Riordan on board, we can have a series that stays more true to the themes of the books, and we can have a completed saga where we watch Percy mature into his demi-godhood.

No release date has been set for the first season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians but catch it on Disney+ soon.

Tony Hale Stars in New Trailer for Disney’s The Mysterious Benedict Society https://www.geekfeed.com/tony-hale-stars-in-new-trailer-for-disneys-the-mysterious-benedict-society/ Fri, 21 May 2021 09:59:24 +0000 https://www.geekfeed.com/?p=59610 While Disney+ may be flying high with Star Wars and Marvel properties like The Mandalorian and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, they’ve just announced a new show that’s based on the Mysterious Benedict Society books by Trenton Lee Stewart.

Check out the trailer for the Mysterious Benedict Society down here:

In the original books, Mr. Benedict (Tony Hale) recruits four gifted orphans to save the world from The Emergency, a global crisis orchestrated by Dr. Curtain (also played by Hale). Together, kids Reynie, Sticky, Kate, and Constance must infiltrate the LIVE Institute and put a stop to Curtain’s plans.

There looks to be three main entries in the series that came out in the late 00s with The Mysterious Benedict Society (TMBS), TMBS and the Perilous Journey, and TMBS and the Prisoner’s Dillema. The latest book in the series came out ten years later in 2019 with TMBS and the Riddle of Ages, with a prequel book focused on a young Nicholas Benedict coming out in 2012.

According to Deadline, the project was originally developed by Hulu before it was moved over to Disney+ in late 2020. The series is also the last project by producer Jamie Tarses, who had helped develop legendary shows like Friends and Frasier.

Though a lot of people are putting focus on Disney’s adaptation of the Percy Jackson books, The Mysterious Benedict Society should be a fascinating series for the YA genre. After the success of Netflix’s Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, it seems that these YA books have found a safer adaptation route with television. I guess the success of the Harry Potter and the Hunger Games films were just too hard to replicate—especially in today’s streaming-centric climate.

Catch The Mysterious Benedict Society when it premieres on Disney+ on June 25.

Casting for Disney+’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians is Officially Underway https://www.geekfeed.com/casting-for-disneys-percy-jackson-and-the-olympians-is-officially-underway/ Wed, 28 Apr 2021 11:57:04 +0000 https://www.geekfeed.com/?p=59271 The Percy Jackson franchise had failed to kick-off after Sea of Monsters, but creator Rick Riordan is now teaming up with Disney+ to bring Percy’s story to a while new generation of kids. The project looks to have been officially greenlit, and Riordan has announced that casting is underway.

Here’s his post:

https://twitter.com/rickriordan/status/1387108165171490822

For more casting details, you can check them here.

Though Percy had been aged up for the movies, Riordan is going to stick to the original books and cast an actor who can ‘play 12.’ The goal is essentially to start the show with young Percy, and have him age as the seasons progress—that is, if Disney allows five seasons.

What’s interesting is, the show is inviting actors of all ethnicities to play Percy, and while Percy is the main target of auditions now, the show’s priority is to land a solid trio with Percy, Grover, and Annabeth.

For more information on auditions, you can click the link here.

While the millenials had Harry Potter, Percy Jackson and the Olympians was the fantasy series that was a hit among the zoomer generation. The movies had admittedly skipped over the more serialized elements of the book that made it interesting, but with Riordan onboard (and the benefit of hindsight), this upcoming series is hoping to be the hit that the original books were.

Twelve-year-old Percy Jackson is on the most dangerous quest of his life. With the help of a satyr and a daughter of Athena, Percy must journey across the United States to catch a thief who has stolen the original weapon of mass destruction — Zeus’ master bolt.

No release date has been set for Percy Jackson and the Olympians on Disney+.
