New Featurette For Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One

Steven Spielberg was one of the biggest directors in the 80s, and it’s only fitting that he would be hired to direct the live-action adaptation of Ready Player One, Ernest Cline’s pop-culture love letter to the aforementioned decade. A new featurette has been released giving us a new look at the film as well as some insight from Spielberg and Cline.

Just by looking at the trailer, I’m excited to see how many characters they can fit into this movie without breaking any copyright issues. The first trailer confirmed characters like Gandalf, Harley Quinn, Duke Nukem, and the Iron Giant, and the second one gave us glimpses of newer pop culture figures like Tracer from Overwatch. There’s even a classic RX-78-2 from Gundam!

The way all these characters come together, it’s like Ready Player One is turning out to be a modern-day remake of Who Framed Roger Rabbit; not in a sense that it’s a movie that mixes live-action with animation, but in a sense that it manages to crossover several characters from multiples popular franchises.

Here’s the official description for Ready Player One:

The film is set in 2045, with the world on the brink of chaos and collapse. But the people have found salvation in the OASIS, an expansive virtual reality universe created by the brilliant and eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance). When Halliday dies, he leaves his immense fortune to the first person to find a digital Easter egg he has hidden somewhere in the OASIS, sparking a contest that grips the entire world. When an unlikely young hero named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) decides to join the contest, he is hurled into a breakneck, reality-bending treasure hunt through a fantastical universe of mystery, discovery, and danger.

Get hyped for Ready Player One when it hits theaters March 30!
