E.T., Close Encounters and that weird little stint in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull – that’s how many of us have come to know and love Steven Spielberg’s obsession with sci-fi. And now Spielberg is finally returning to the sci-fi genre with Ready Player One in 2018.
Based on the 2011 book by Ernie Cline, Ready Player One centres around a world in 2044, with humans preferring to spend their time inside a virtual reality platform than in the filthy, over-populated reality. This virtual reality, dubbed OASIS, allows people to interact through digital avatars, exploring a series of worlds and carrying out the day-to-day – including going to school.
A couple of years before the film’s setting, OASIS’ inventor James Halliday dies, leaving an Easter Egg hunt behind inside. Whoever owns all three Easter eggs gains ownership over the entirety of OASIS; like someone owning the entire Internet.
This is where the film’s protagonist enters. Wade Watts, played by Tye Sheridan, discovers the first clue some years after Halliday’s death. This makes him Target Number 1 for the others who want ownership over OASIS and bad things start to happen.
Olivia Cooke will be playing Art3mis, a famous blogger and gunter who Wade develops a virtual relationship with. He develops a crush on her throughout Ready Player One. Although, the two will be in competition to find the Easter eggs.
Nolan Sorrento, played by Ben Mendelsohn, who’ll also be in Star Wars: Rogue One, enters as the film’s main villian. With the VR currently free for its users, Nolan, a high-ranking official, wants to own OASIS so that he can put a big fat price tag on it. He’ll be hunting for the eggs as one hive mind with his employees — Agent Smith, anyone?
Simon Pegg will also be featuring in the film as Ogden Morrow. Morrow, being Halliday’s partner and old friend helped to create OASIS and, according to Collider is the Steve Wozinak of the story.
With Spielberg directing, and John Williams providing the blockbuster scores, we’ll be in capable hands. Ready Player One is slated for release worldwide on March 30, 2018.
