Todd Philipps’ Joker was a surprise hit, and though the film stands pretty well on its own, Phillips and Phoenix have teamed up for a sequel. Now Joker: Folie a deux has its release date.
According to Discussing Film, Joker: Folie a deux has been set for a release on October 4, 2024. The movie will have Joaquin Phoenix returning as the Clown Prince of Crime with Lady Gaga expected to play the role of his psychologist Harley Quinn. What’s more, the movie is said to be moving on from its original period drama format and will be a full-on musical.
While we don’t have an official synopsis for the film, the title does provide some kind of hint. Though it has no direct translation, “folie a deux” is said to refer to a ‘delusion/mental illness shared by two people, usually members of a close family’.
Though we get to watch Arthur coping with his own loneliness in the first film, it’s going to be interesting to watch him have his own match—who could very well be Harley Quinn. Then again, Harley and Joker’s relationship is notoriously toxic in the comics, and a lot of writers have always considered Joker’s true romance to be with Batman.
Phoenix absolutely nailed the role, and I’d be fine with an expansion of his character’s story. While there are certain possibilities that this wouldn’t get the same praise as the first film, I’m always eager to watch filmmakers make the attempt, rather than not at all.
Catch Joker: Folie a deux when it comes to theaters Oct. 4, 2024.
