Glee fans were distraught when news came out that Naya Rivera had gone missing, and as each day passed, everyone was getting more and more sure that she had drowned in Lake Piru. The sad news is, Rivera’s body had been recovered, and the star has indeed died at the age of 33.
According to Daily Mail, Rivera’s body was recovered on July 13, on the anniversary of the death of her other Glee co-star Cory Monteith. She had apparently climbed off the boat with her son Josey to go swimming, but after she boosted him up, she had apparently disappeared into the water. Ventura County Sheriff Bill Ayub said about Rivera: ‘She must have mustered enough energy to get her son back on the boat, but not enough to save herself.’
Seeing that Glee was one of the biggest shows back in its heyday, several tributes have gone out to Rivera from fans online. With Rivera’s character Santana being a lesbian struggling with her sexuality in the show, a lot of people have said that it was Santana’s character arc that gave them the strength to come out in real life.
Things have been looking glum for the cast of Glee. Besides the death of Monteith, Mark Salling (Puck) had also committed suicide back in 2018, shortly before his sentence for possession of child pornography. Star Lea Michelle had also been accused recently of being racist towards cast members—even said to have a feud with Rivera herself.
If anything, Rivera had made such an impact to so any youths today, and it certainly is sad that she has gone too soon.
