A lot of fans were unsure when a Joker movie was announced, but the film turned out to be a hit, and the sequel is already underway. Besides the casting on one Lady Gaga opposite a returning Joaquin Phoenix, some new cast members have been announced for the film.
According to Deadline, Catherine Keener (Get Out) has been cast in a secret role in the film, alongside Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin) who will also be playing an entirely new character. We don’t have any specifics on either Keener or Gleeson’s roles, but I can imagine them playing completely new characters like De Niro’s Murray Franklin or familiar faces from the comics like Brett Cullen’s Thomas Wayne.
If you ask me, Gleeson can easily play another Arkham character, maybe an Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin or the obsessed Doctor Hugo Strange. Who knows, maybe they can even gender-bend the Strange character and have Keener play the part of the Nurse Ratched-type who watches over the inmates.
With the sequel taking on the musical genre, I’m excited to see where Todd Philipps is willing to go. The first Joker was already a big swing for the director, and it yielded some great results. Who knows what’s in store for this version of the character. Will he eventually end up facing Batman by a third movie? Will we go through several other iconic Joker moments from the comics like the murder of Jason Todd?
We’ll just have to wait and see.
Joker: Folie a Deux is set to come out Oct. 4, 2024.
