The internet collectively cringed when Genie was first revealed in the Aladdin teaser, but now Disney has released a full trailer for the film, and I have to say, the Genie looks a lot better—plus we get a look at how he plays off onscreen.
A thrilling and vibrant live-action adaptation of Disney’s animated classic, “Aladdin” is the exciting tale of the charming street rat Aladdin, the courageous and self-determined Princess Jasmine and the Genie who may be the key to their future.
A lot of pressure is on Smith to deliver a Genie following the iconic performance of Robin Williams, but it seems that they’re bringing his own original flair with this take. While the animated Genie was an exaggeration of Williams himself, this version looks to draw on Smith’s natural charisma and humor to bring the character to life.
While we seem to get confirmations of musical performances for Friend Like Me and A Whole New World, I’m hoping the film doesn’t drop fun songs like Prince Ali and One Jump as well. Maybe they can even go so far as to bring to screen Jafar’s cut song from the original Why Me:
The Aladdin movie is looking fun, and it’s set to hit theaters May 24.
