A lot of fans were eager to watch the new trailer for Zack Snyder’s Justice League yesterday, and while we did get a much-anticipated look at Jared Leto’s Joker, a lot of fans are wondering why his line in the trailer would reference the meme, “we live in a society”?
Ever since the trailer dropped, fans online have been questioning whether Snyder really pit that line in there ironically, or whether this was all some elaborate trolling on his part:

Mfs trying to explain how Zack Snyder is actually a terrible filmmaker because he used the "we live in a society" line

Though some fans are turned off by the line, some have opted to give Snyder the benefit of the doubt and see this as some kind of joke that he’s sharing with his netizen fans; after all, it was support from the internet that got the cut of this movie released.
If you’re still confused about ‘we live in a society,’ as a meme, KnowYourMeme has a pretty extensive coverage of its history. As far as today goes, ‘we live in a society’ has been a line associated with the character of the Joker who has become a mascot for some very ‘edgy’ (and honestly cringe-worthy) quotes that get shared online. With Snyder making Leto’s Joker actually say, “we live in a society,” fans are wondering if this is a clever wink, or un-ironic embrace of that branch of cringe culture.
Personally, I thought it was hilarious, and I can’t wait for Zack Snyder’s Justice League. I’ll admit, I am a tad worried that Snyder might go all in with the edgy aspect of the character, but at least it will be his vision, and it seems that everyone in the cast and crew is onboard.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League hits HBO Max on March 18.
