The Mandalorian: Taika Waititi Calls His IG-11 ‘Innocent and Naive’

Taika Waititi may have played the alien Korg in Thor: Ragnarok, but he’s going to be a droid in the Star Wars universe in the form of IG-11 on The Mandalorian. We don’t know much about the bounty hunter droid yet, but Waititi has given us a little character description for his faceless droid hunter.

Talking to Entertainment Weekly, Waititi says that IG-11 is actually kind of an innocent character. He says:

“[IG-11 is] very innocent and naive and direct and doesn’t know about sarcasm and doesn’t know how to lie… It’s like a child with a gun.”

If anything, IG-11 basically falls under the same stigma that all droids in Star Wars are meant for comic relief. Besides the OG C-3PO, you also have the likes of K-2SO from Rogue One as well as L3-37 from Solo. Even the droid army from the prequels were nothing but a bunch of silly Chaplins.

When it came to the voice, Waititi was also said to have found a balance between Siri and HAL 9000. It’s funny that he actually tried to sound robotic for the character, since I thought it would have already been humorous enough if IG-11 just talked in Waititi’s native Kiwi accent. This is also just wishful thinking on my part, but I think it would be hilarious, if we met the more infamous IG-88, and he was voiced by Waititi’s co-star from What We Do in the Shadows Jemaine Clement.

Hopefully IG-11 gets more love than just one episode.

Catch The Mandalorian when it launches alongside Disney+ on Nov. 12.
