June came out with the news that the Wachowskis were set to return to the Matrix franchise, and they would be having Michael B. Jordan as the new lead. We haven’t been getting any significant updates for a few months, but news has just dropped that two heavy hitters from the original films are going to make their return.

As per Variety, the fourth Matrix film will see the return of Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, and the two will be reprising their roles as Neo and Trinity. We don’t have any other details on their return, but hopefully they’ll have more substantial roles as compared to cameos.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVTh396YR90

If anything, we could be looking at a classic reboot/sequel situation just like what happened with Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Blade Runner 2049. The franchise would move forward with a whole new character, but we’ll also have appearances from the original actors as they use this film as a “passing of the torch” if you will. So this time, Jordan will be the lead, and we'll have Neo and Trinity be the new "Morpheuses" and introduce him to the world of the Matrix.

At least that's my guess.

The movie is said to be written and directed by Lana Wachowski and writers David Mitchell and Aleksandar Hemon are also attached to the project. Wachowski had this to say about coming back to the franchise:

“Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now. I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.”

No release date has been set for the next Matrix film, but production is said to be aiming for a 2020 start.
