Star Wars Episode IX: Natalie Portman Shoots Down Rumors of Her Involvement

Star Wars Episode IX will be the conclusion of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, and it’s said that it will conclude the Skywalker saga for the franchise. A rumor has apparently gone out that Natalie Portman will be reprising her role as Padme Amidala for the film; unfortunately for Padme fans, this rumor has come out false.

This was confirmed by Portman herself in an interview:

An appearance from Portman is understandable. For Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Ewan McGregor made a small voice cameo as Obi-Wan in The Force Awakens saying, “These are your first steps,” after Rey’s Force vision. It was also rumored that Hayden Christensen was considered to appear as a Force Ghost to Kylo Ren. An appearance from Padme won’t be too farfetched.

With The Last Jedi tearing down any significance of legacies, I would like Episode IX to move on as well, but seeing that it’s Carrie Fisher’s last film, and we’re expecting a sendoff for Leia, maybe a visit to Padme’s tomb would be fitting? That way, Portman doesn’t even have to appear at all.

To be honest, we don’t know what to expect with Star Wars Episode IX, and that’s another great thing done by TLJ. It subverted all expectations from a familiar Star Wars formula and allowed for something entirely new. Hopefully J.J. Abrams will be more daring instead of just rehashing a lot of familiar tropes like he did with The Force Awakens.

Catch Star Wars Episode IX in theaters Dec. 20, 2019.
