The horror genre has made a kick of using almost harmless things and make them sources of fear from clowns in IT to motherhood in Babadook, and now Paramount Pictures has released a trailer that will have you freaking out over people smiling.
Here’s the trailer for Smile:
Here’s the official description:
After witnessing a bizarre, traumatic incident involving a patient, Dr. Rose Cotter (Sosie Bacon) starts experiencing frightening occurrences that she can’t explain. As an overwhelming terror begins taking over her life, Rose must confront her troubling past in order to survive and escape her horrifying new reality.
The trailer really delves into that ‘unseen horror’ territory, and I’m really curious to see what kind of monster this movie is going to give us. While we only ever see the smiles on other people’s faces, we do get a look of a monster that gets set on fire.
I’ll be amazed if this movie turns out to be a metaphor for something. If The Witch can be about rebellion and liberation of woman, I’m speculating that Smile could have something to do about hidden emotions and masking feelings. Then again, that’s just my guess.
The Horror genre has certainly evolved throughout the years. Not only are we getting movies that have a look and sound designed to make us uneasy in multiple levels, but we’re also getting stories and metaphors dealing with real-life social horrors that we experience day to day.
Smile comes to theaters on Sept. 30.
