20 years ago, Disney had attempted to ride on the success of the Pirates of the Caribbean hype by releasing The Haunted Mansion starring Eddie Murphy. With enough time since that film’s release, the studio is now taking another stab at the property, and they’ve brought in a star-studded cast which includes Rosario Dawson, Owen Wilson, LaKeith Stanfield, and more.
Check this out:
The synopsis reads:
A single mom named Gabbie hires a tour guide, a psychic, a priest, and a historian to help exorcise their newly bought mansion; after discovering it is inhabited by ghosts.
While the film describes itself as a horror movie, we should expect it to be on the more kid-friendly side—more Goosebumps than Midsommar. Director Justin Simien had this to say about the reveal:
“As a lifelong fan of the Haunted Mansion attraction, I’m beyond excited to share the teaser trailer for our new film adaptation featuring an incredible cast. Our team has worked tirelessly to create a scary, funny and cinematic otherworldly adventure for both new and die-hard fans to enjoy! I can’t wait for audiences to experience this big screen version of the iconic Disney attraction.”
With 2003’s Haunted Mansion failing to meet expectations, I hope that this new movie will manage to reinvigorate the audience’s interest in kid-friendly horror. I mean, if Stranger Things can do it, I’m pretty sure Haunted Mansion is welcome to try again.
Haunted Mansion comes to cinemas on July 28.
