With Margot Robbie’s success and good looks, she as the perfect actress to cast as female icon Barbie for Greta Gerwig’s movie, but rumor has come out that Robbie won’t be the only one playing the character.
As per NY Times’ Kyle Buchanan, Barbie may actually feature multiple versions of Barbie and Ken—each played by different actors. Robbie is only playing the white blonde version of the character, but Issa Rae and Hari Nef will play a different version of Barbie as well. On the Ken side of things, Ryan Gosling, Ncuti Gatwa, and Simu Liu are all said to be playing different versions of the same character.
Here’s the post:
And, by the same token, Margot Robbie is not the film’s only Barbie. Issa Rae and Hari Nef play different Barbies…

If this turns out to be some kind of big spoiler, I’m sure going to be bummed, but then again, I am more intrigued to see what kind of direction Gerwig is going for the film. With her adaptation of Little Women also being kind of a meta-commentary on the story of author Louisa May Alcott. With Barbie recently gaining criticism for promoting unhealthy body standards and the toy’s lack of diversity, I think we could be in for another meta-film as well.
Until we get our first trailer, all we can really do is guess, but with Robbie getting involved, I’m hoping this movie actually has something meaningful to say; besides it being a toy-promoting cash grab.
Greta Gerwig’s Barbie starring Margot Robbie comes to theaters on July 21, 2023.
