Disney has been hot on the live-action fad in the last few years. Since 2015, the media giant has churned out four adaptations – Cinderella, The Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast, and Christopher Robins – at least once per year.

Unsurprisingly, now that Disney’s experienced success with the previous remakes, the Mickey Mouse House has more projects lined up. One of which is the highly anticipated live-action version of 1995’s Aladdin.

Aladdin is slated to be released in 2019. With the impending premiere less than a year away, the studio has been ramping up its efforts to promote the film. Recently, much to the excitement of Disney’s fans, the first teaser trailer has been dropped.

Like most initial trailers, the first teaser for Aladdin doesn’t reveal much about the movie. Nevertheless, it seems like the feature would not deviate too much from its source material. Front and center is Iago, Jafar’s right-hand parrot, as it scales the magnificent desert city of Agrabah. The trailer also gives audiences a first look of the iconic Disney street rat played by Mena Massoud.

The trailer was less than a minute and a half long. However, it was enough to incite even more anticipation for fans who have been waiting for years for another Aladdin movie.

Aside from the trailer, the cast and crew of the upcoming adaptation have also released details about their impending project. In fact, Princess Jasmine herself, aka Naomi Scott, have already gushed about her role as a royalty from Agrabah.

In a interview with The Hollywood Reporter late last year, Scott was ecstatic about getting to play the role of Jasmine. The relative newbie enjoyed being able to give life to a Disney princess – to make someone like Jasmine more three-dimensional:

“I love what Disney is doing at the moment with their princesses — going from animation to live-action and making those animated characters real human beings. Being a female character is also about being a real person, and guess what? [She] can be strong and have fun, but also get it wrong and be emotional. She’s a multidimensional woman, and she doesn’t have to just be one thing.”

Jasmine is notably the only female role in the animated version of Aladdin. Thankfully, the live-action version is about to change that by introducing Jasmine’s handmaiden Dalia – played by SNL’s Nassim Perdad.

According to Scott, Dalia’s character is near and dear to her heart. For her, it is important for young women to see that their relationship with other women is just as important as every other relationship:

“I never realized it, but in the animation, Jasmine is really the only female character — isn’t that crazy?. The Dalia character is so important to this movie because she’s the only other female character. She may be the handmaiden but they’re best friends; they’re so close because they’ve grown up together. So we wanted people to watch the movie and see Jasmine’s relationship with another woman, and be like, ‘Ah, that’s what I’m like with my girlfriend,’ or ‘We would so do that if I was in that position.’ That’s something that’s missing from the animation.

Aladdin would be premiering on May 24, 2019.
