Kiernan Shipka to Return as Sabrina Spellman in Riverdale

When Chilling Adventures of Sabrina was first announced, it was expected to be a spinoff of Riverdale, but the show had opted to exist in its own world when it ran for four seasons. With Sabrina getting cancelled though, Kiernan Shipka has announced that she will be returning as the character in the upcoming season of Riverdale.

Shipka confirmed it on her IG:

Showrunner for Riverdale Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa also tells EW about the crossover:

We’ve been talking about having Sabrina visit Riverdale since season 1, so it’s thrilling that this is finally happening, as part of our ‘Riverdale’ special event. It’s also perfect that she shows up to help Cheryl Blossom during her hour of greatest need. Everyone on set lost their minds — I think fans will, too. It’s really fun and special.

Though Sabrina and Riverdale exist in very different worlds, the characters do crossover all the time in Archie comics, and it would be great to see how Sabrina fits into this world. Though she may have lost her show, maybe this means that we can see more of her character (as well as other characters from her show) pop up in the future—much like what happened with John Constantine and Legends of Tomorrow.

Here’s the synopsis of The Witching Hour(s), Sabrina’s guest episode:

Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) is performing a dangerous spell, one that may mean the difference between life and death for a beloved member of the Blossom family, according to a logline description of the episode. Luckily, she’s getting a much-needed assist from everybody’s favorite 20-something witch, the iconic Sabrina Spellman (Shipka), visiting from Greendale in this years-in-the-making crossover.

Sabrina visits Riverdale when her episode airs on Dec. 7. You can catch all four seasons of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina now on Netflix.
