Fantastic Beasts star Johnny Depp has been in the middle of a shit-storm with ex-wife Amber Heard in what was called the ‘libel trial of the century’ with Depp saying that Heard has been making false claims in an attempt to ruin his reputation. After months of this thing dragging out, it looks like Depp has lost the case.
According to The Daily Mail, the high court has ruled that Depp is indeed a wife-beater and says that the report about him which was published on The Sun back in 2018 was ‘substantially true.’ Heard had also said that she was ‘relieved,’ but ‘not surprised’ at the court’s ruling.
Back when the case was first starting out, Heard had accused Depp of battery and substance abuse, but as it dragged along, it was revealed that Depp was the one being abused (even having part of his finger cut off by Heard) and that it was Heard that was trying to ruin his reputation.
Depp’s lawyer has been saying that the court had severely overlooked a lot of the evidence that they brought up during the case. They said:
“… Most troubling is the Judge’s reliance on the testimony of Amber Heard, and corresponding disregard of the mountain of counter-evidence from police officers, medical practitioners, her own former assistant, other unchallenged witnesses and an array of documentary evidence which completely undermined the allegations, point by point. All of this was overlooked.
They have also called the ruling ‘as perverse as it is bewildering,’ and that Depp would probably try to appeal the decision.
We don’t know how this is going to proceed moving forward. If anything, Depp’s career could be in shambles, what with Fantastic Beasts author J.K. Rowling also in hot water over the internet. With Rowling’s endorsement of Depp, he could very well just be the next to hit the wave of Cancel Culture.
For now, all we can really do is wait and see. Fantastic Beasts 3 is set to come out Nov. 12, 2021.
