James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad hasn’t even released yet, but we already got an announcement that a spinoff starring John Cena’s Peacemaker is already in the works for HBO Max. What’s interesting is, we don’t have to wait too long until the release.

As per HBO Max’s Casey Bloys (via James Gunn), the Peacemaker series is expected to come out in January 2022. Here’s Gunn’s post:

We don’t know exactly what to expect with a series like Peacemaker, but Gunn himself has expressed excitement over getting to work on television for the first time. He writes, “#Peacemaker is my first real foray into television & I’m enjoying it immensely. Being able to explore the lives & relationships of characters over numerous episodes feels like being able to fully breathe creatively for the first time.”

We don’t know much about Cena’s version of Peacemaker yet, but he has been described as a ‘douche-y Captain America’ with Gunn saying that the central point of the character is that he believes in ‘peace at any cost; no matter how many people he needs to kill along the way.’

Though Cena is best known for his work in pro-wrestling, he has been making an interesting transition into films, and he’s also proven himself to be able to pull off jokes with the right timing. Add to that Gunn’s sense of humor, and we may have another memorable character on our hands.

No specific release date has been set for the Peacemaker series, but we should expect it to debut on HBO Max sometime next January. In the meantine, catch Peacemaker in The Suicide Squad which comes out Aug. 6.
