With Gavin O’Connor leaving Suicide Squad 2, James Gunn has been hired to write and possibly direct the project for WB. There have been rumors going around that Gunn is going to fully reboot the franchise, but as it turns out, it might not be that drastic of change as some thought it out to be.

Based on insider @DanielRPK:

I asked about it and was told “Think more like G.I. Joe: Retaliation than a full-blown reboot.” So It’ll be set in the same world, it’ll have some of the same actors but it’ll feel [fresh] and new.

Just in case you missed out on the Joe films, the sequel was sort of a reboot, what with the movie focusing on mostly a new cast just with some appearances from characters in the original.

If you ask me, this is probably the best way to go for the sequel. Though Suicide Squad may have been a critical bomb, it’s not without its merits. The look of the film was amazing, and David Ayer did some incredible work bringing Task Force X to life. You also have some great standout characters like Deadshot (Will Smith) and Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie). They didn’t even use him that much, but I would like to see more of Jai Courtney’s Captain Boomerang.

After getting fired from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, it might be best for Gunn to embrace another ensemble film like this. This is just my wishful thinking, but I hope they go the mature route for this one as Guardians has to be a bit more kid-friendly. What happened to the amazing Suicide Squad that was teased in the trailers?

The Suicide Squad sequel still has no official release date.
