Ben Affleck leaving his role as Batman has been in the rumor mill since last year. The actor has neither confirmed nor denied the reports and since then multiple rumors have branched out about other actors playing the titular character including Jake Gyllenhaal.

In an interview with CNA Lifestyle, Jake Gyllenhaal has confirmed that, at least as of the moment, he would not be playing Batman:

“Wow, that’s a very difficult question. The answer to that question is no.”

This is not the first time Gyllenhaal was rumored to play the DC character. Matt Reeves, the writer for the upcoming The Batman movie, is reportedly interested in casting Gyllenhaal in the role. Even, Christopher Nolan, director of the Dark Knight series, also considered the “Nightcrawler” actor for the 2008 iteration of the character. However, the role ultimately went to Christian Bale.

With Batman comes Joker. In the same light, there are rumors as to who would play The Joker in the upcoming DC flick. Reportedly, one of the frontrunners is Joaquin Phoenix. The actor was recently interviewed by Fandango. He explains that he is interested in the role and if everything comes together, he is open to the possibility:

“I see it as any other movie. I wouldn’t say I won’t do Westerns. It depends on what it is. I don’t really care about the genre, I care about the character and the filmmaker. If you have the ability to transcend the genre, then that’s what you want to do. So I wouldn’t say, hands down, no – I wouldn’t do that kind of movie. There are things where I’ve flirted with the possibility where there was the potential for this to be… something that’s actually interesting to me. But then for whatever reason, they never got to that place where everyone else feels the same way. And that’s key. Everyone has to want to explore the same thing or else it just doesn’t f**king work. I’m not opposed to it. I don’t make decisions on a budget or things like that – it’s really the filmmaker and the character.”

Details about The Batman movie has been scarce. Aside from the casting, the release date has yet to be confirmed.
