News has come out recently that HBO has cancelled the Game of Thrones prequel starring Naomi Watts, but it looks like they’re pushing forward with another spinoff. Just in, the official Game of Thrones page has released their teaser poster for House of the Dragon.
Check it out:
#HouseOfTheDragon, a #GameofThrones prequel is coming to @HBO.
The series is co-created by @GRRMSpeaking and Ryan Condal. Miguel Sapochnik will partner with Condal as showrunner and will direct the pilot and additional episodes. Condal will be writing the series. pic.twitter.com/9ttMzElgXm

The series is said to focus on Aegon Targaryen and his conquering of Westeros and will be based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood. We don’t know how far the HBO series is into development, but Martin himself is credited as co-creator, and Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik will executive produce.
While Condal himself seems to be a newcomer to the franchise, Sapochnik has proven himself time and time again as one of the best directors in the series, being at the helm for episodes like Battle of the Bastards, The Long Night, and The Bells.
While focusing on the Targaryens may promise an action-heavy series, I was kind of hoping that we would get something closer to the earlier Game of Thrones days full of intrigue and drama. After all, it was the lack of character development that kind of ruined the series toward the finale. Never mind all the action setpieces.
If anything, Condal and Sapochnik have the source material to draw from, and that’s one thing that Game of Thrones kind of ran out of. Hopefully this all turns out for the best. And maybe they can even get some story elements from the cancelled series because I still would have loved to see the old houses in their earlier forms.
No release date has been set for House of the Dragon.
