A lot of people were exicted when it was announcaed that Robert Downey Jr. would be making a comeback for a third Sherlock Holmes movie, and the film was set to come out later next year. The bad news is, it looks like the movie would have to be indefinitely delayed.
Talking to Celebrity Catch Up Podcast (via GVN), Sherlock Holmes 3 director Dexter Fletcher shares that the film has been put on the ‘back burner’ as the studio is still trying to figure out how to navigate the global pandemic.
Seeing that it’s been a decade since the release of Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, it’s very likely that the studio is in no rush to pump out another Holmes film. Add to that, Robert Downey Jr. himself has expressed that he would want to build a cinematic universe around Sherlock Holmes; but a lot of fans are hoping that doesn’t come to pass, because it basically screams Dark Universe, and we all know how that ended. If you ask me, they should just find out which studio has the rights to League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and just make a reboot film from that IP.
While I’m sure some are bummed that the film could be delayed, I think there are some good things that could come out of this. Personally, I’ve been hoping that original director Guy Ritchie comes back to helm, and maybe this delay could finally get him back onboard. I’m not saying he will, but maybe this time he might. After all, shouldn’t he be allowed to complete his trilogy of Sherlock films?
As of now, Sherlock Holmes 3 is still looking at a Dec. 22, 2021 release date.
