According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hailee Steinfeld is currently in talks to star in the Transformers spin off Bumblebee.  Travis Knight, director of the stop animation film Kubo and the Two Strings, is set to direct the project.  The script has been written by Christina Hodson (Shut In).

Although Optimus Prime is arguably the most famous of the Autobots in the Transformers series, Bumblebee would be considered a close second. Bumblebee is the yellow and black striped Camero throughout the series and has been a key companion to many of the characters thus far.  As a fan favorite, Bumblebee is the perfect character for Paramount to use to shoulder the load of their first proposed spinoff.

Although plot details are being held close to the chest, it is known that Steinfeld’s potential character would be a tomboy who also holds a job as a mechanic after school.

This project is the first spinoff for the Transformers series.  The studio has hopes they can develop a strong Transformers Cinematic Universe, and that’s not out of the question considering the series has already generated over $3.7 billion worldwide.  If you’re interested in seeing Bumblebee when it arrives in theaters next year, make sure you catch Transformers: The Last Knight, in theaters on June 23rd.  Although the two films will not be directly related, the upcoming Transformers film is likely to tie into Bumblebee in some capacity.

Steinfeld made her debut in the Coen Brothers’ 2010 remake of True Grit, a role which landed the young actress an Oscar nomination for best actress in a supporting role.  As of late, the actress has found success in the music industry with her singing career and most recently received praise for her performance in the drama The Edge of Seventeen.

Bumblebee is slated to hit theaters June 8, 2018.
