Game of Thrones Animated Series in the Works

While fans wait for the release of the Targaryen-centric Game of Thrones spinoff, House of the Dragon, HBO is hard at work trying to find out other ways to milk the Westeros IP. We know that multiple shows are in various stages of development, but there’s one GOT series that will be exploring a different medium.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, an animated Game of Thrones series is in the ‘early stages of development’ for HBO Max. For now, multiple meetings have been taking place with several writers, but so far, no one has officially signed in on the project. With other properties in development, it’s very possible that this animated series results into nothing—much like the other Thrones prequel that George R.R. Martin was working on.

Probably the closest thing that Game of Thrones has to an animated series are the History and Lore videos that come with every season. The videos tackle specific stories in the Song of Ice and Fire lore, and they’re also narrated by actors from the main show reprising their characters. While they’re not full-on animations, they’re still very interesting to watch, and they give great insight on things that we don’t get to watch unfold on the actual series.

After a disappointing finale, you would think that HBO would try to move on from Game of Thrones, but the world is just so vast and expansive that you can’t blame the network for looking for more stories to tell. We can only wonder what kind of story HBO is going to explore in this new show.

No release date has been set for House of the Dragon, but the series is expected to premiere sometime in 2022. In the meantime, you can catch the complete Game of Thrones now streaming on HBO Max.
