Fantastic Beasts 3 Has Not Yet Asked Johnny Depp to Return

It was no joke that Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald was kind of a mess of a film, and the sequel has been delayed for a year, probably to give J.K. Rowling extra time to work out the kinks of her story. While Johnny Depp’s Grindelwald took center stage (sort of) for Fantastic Beasts 2, there has been a concern that he may not be coming back for the third movie.

According to The Blast, sources close to Depp have said that WB has not yet approached him to appear in Fantastic Beasts 3. Depp has also been in the center of controversy with his ex, Amber Heard, but the studio (and even Rowling herself) are glad to have Depp onboard for the franchise.

Rowling had this to say about Depp’s inclusion:

“Based on our understanding of the circumstances, the filmmakers and I are not only comfortable sticking with our original casting but genuinely happy to have Johnny playing a major character in the movies.”

With a lot of time between now and the release of FB3, I guess it’s not really a concern if Depp hasn’t signed on yet. With main character Newt taking the sidelines in his own movie, I think it would even be possible that the franchise just skips the whole clash with Grindelwald and just have Newt his own adventure. Then again, that would be a hard turn in another direction, seeing as the whole point of the last film was to set-up a clash between Dumbledore and Grindelwald.

We don’t know how this will all turn out, but hopefully, the next movie will be something that won’t disappoint.

Catch Fantastic Beasts 3 in theaters Nov. 12, 2021.
