Though we didn’t get a glimpse of him in Shazam!, Dwayne Johnson has signed on to be Captain Marvel’s rival Black Adam. The movie is set to begin production sometime next year, and Johnson gives us a little teaser of what to expect with his DC antihero.

Talking to ComicBook, Johnson reveals, “Black Adam, how he starts, he starts off as a villain… Then, he becomes an anti-hero. And then he might become a hero or we might not.”

While Johnson only had that to say, his producer Hiram Garcia talked a lot more about Black Adam’s interpretation onscreen:

“Well, you’re going to meet is you’re going to meet a character who’s going through a journey… And I think the idea is, look, we know the root of obviously Black Adam. He was created as a villain. And through the love of the fans and through some great writers and storytellers, he evolved into an antihero. The antihero is a character that we always loved and that we responded to. But we understand that there’s been many aspects to Black Adam through him. But ultimately this is a guy who he does have a moral compass as skewed as it may be. And ultimately he is a guy that everything has always been driven by his family and what happens to them. And he is never opposed to unleashing hell when you cross him. So I think when you add in those elements of that DNA, those are things we’re very aware of.”

Though a lot of people are expecting a clash between Captain Marvel and Adam in the next movie, Zachary Levi himself has confirmed that they’re saving it for the third Shazam!. With’s Adam’s status as an anti-hero though, I’m kind of hoping they write him a bit better. The last anti-hero film we had was Venom and that film was a critical mess.

For now, Shazam! 2 is set to have Mister Mind as the next villain. We don’t have a release date yet, but it’s likely we could get the movie sometime in 2022.
