A lot of people were excited for the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in 2021, but it looks like the movie has suffered a major setback.

According to Variety, director Scott Derrickson has decided to step down from his role at the helm. Derrickson has apparently left because of “creative differences”, but he will still be attached to the movie as an executive producer.

Marvel Studios had this to say about Derrickson’s exit:

“Marvel Studios and Scott Derrickson have amicably parted ways on ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ due to creative differences… We remain grateful to Scott for his contributions to the MCU.”

Derrickson has also posted this tweet on his personal Twitter account:

We don’t have any details as to what these creative differences are, but some are guessing that Derrickson was set to make an all-out horror movie with the sequel. Until we get any official confirmation, all we can really do now as fans is guess.

For now, Marvel isn’t announcing any delay to the film, but if they’re going to hire a new director, I would rather they push the film back rather than keep the original release date. If The Rise of Skywalker has taught us anything, it’s that good movies take time.

As for Derrickson’s replacement, no other names have been put up for consideration, but I would love to see what the Rick and Morty guys like Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon have to bring to the table, seeing as to how experienced they are when it comes to writing stories around multiverses. If anything, Harmon even helped write the first movie, so he already has experience when it comes to the franchise.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is still set to come out May 7, 2021.
