Greta Gerwig Wanted Timothee Chalamet and Saoirse Ronan to Cameo in Barbie

Every director has frequent collaborators like Christopher Nolan with Michael Caine and Cillian Murphy or James Gunn with Michael Rooker and Nathan Fillion. For Greta Gerwig, that’s Saoirse Ronan and Timothee Chalamet, who’ve both appeared in Lady Bird and Little Women. Fans were expecting the two to show up in some way in Gerwig’s Barbie this month, but apparently plans didn’t push through, and even Gerwig was disappointed.

Talking to CinemaBlend, Gerwig explains:

“Well, it was always going to have to be like a sort of smaller thing because [Ronan] was actually producing at the time, which I am so proud of her for. And of course, it’s brilliant. But it was going to be a specialty cameo. I was also going to do a specialty cameo with Timmy [Chalamet], and both of them couldn’t do it, and I was so annoyed. But I love them so much. But it felt like doing something without my children. I mean, I’m not their mom, but I sort of feel like their mom.”

We don’t know what parts either Ronan or Chalamet could have played, but fans would think that they would have been their own versions of Barbie and Ken. Who knows, maybe they could have been someone in the real world.

So far, the film has managed to amass quite the talent. Besides Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as the leads, the film has also nabbed roles for Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Michael Cera, Hari Nef, Emma Mackey, Alexandra Shipp, Issa Rae, and John Cena. Who knows what other secret cameo is in the film that we don’t know about yet.

Personally, I’m kind of bummed we don’t have a Florence Pugh Barbie, but I guess she was busy with Calamet working on Dune: Part Two.

Catch Barbie when it comes to cinemas on July 21.
