Avengers: RDJ Declined Running for An Oscar for Playing Tony Stark

Avengers: Endgame is currently sitting as the highest grossing movie of all time, and a lot of praise has gone to Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Tony Stark. Everyone including the Russo Brothers want RDJ to get an Oscar for his work in the movie, but as it turns out, Downey himself is not up for it.

Talking to The Howard Stern Show, Downey was asked to comment on whether he thinks he deserves an Oscar for playing Iron Man, and he says, “I’m so glad you brought this up because there was some talk about, and I said let’s not, and because I’m much more like you than you might really want to believe.”

Stern himself seemed adamant that he thought Downey deserved to get recognized for his work on the comic book genre, to which RDJ commented:

“I listen to the show and I agree with most all of your opinions, varied though they may be. Occasionally, you’ll go on some tributary trail of thought I’ll go like ‘oh that’s not how I see it, but I love that you see it that way.”

While a lot of people go crazy over who gets attention at the Oscars, I think it’s best to just enjoy movies as they are. The system is admittedly messed up anyway, and Oscars have become a genre rather than a celebration of the art form. Even if Downey doesn’t get an Oscar, it doesn’t make his performance as Tony Stark any less meaningful.

That’s my opinion anyway.

The next MCU film, Black Widow, is set to come out May 1, 2020.
