Amazon has won over Netflix for the rights to make a Lord of the Rings TV show, and after all the production expenses like casting and visual effects factored in, it’s coming out that Amazon’s LOTR will be the most expensive TV series ever made.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Amazon could be looking to spend upwards of $1 billion to produce the show. With Peter Jackson’s movie series considered to be the best possible version of an adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s books, the show will have a lot of work to do if they want fans to be interested in their retelling of the story.

Attorney Matt Galsor had this to say about the deal:

“This is the most complicated deal I’ve ever seen… but it was handled relatively quickly, in a way that brought the parties together in a close relationship. It was tough, but everybody liked each other and felt like a team more as the deal closed.”

Peter Jackson is also said to have been tapped to executive produce the series, but so far, no solid news has come out about his involvement.

As a fan of the movies, I think a TV series retelling the entirety of the LOTR story would just be ridiculously redundant at this point. I think it would just be best to build upon the universe that Jackson has created like the video games did with Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor.

We don’t know yet when this Lord of the Rings series will come out but with a production this ambitious, we could see the first season released next year.
