While a lot of fans had rejoiced when it was announced that HBO Max would release Zack Snyder’s Justice League, another chunk of the fans were looking ahead and asking for WB to also release David Ayer’s original version of Suicide Squad. With the success of ZSJL, a lot of fans were hoping that WB would consider releasing Ayer’s original version of the film, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

Talking to Variety, WarnerMedia Studios CEO Ann Sarnoff was asked about Ayer’s Suicide Squad, to which she replied, “We won’t be developing David Ayer’s cut.” Sarnoff didn’t elaborate as to why WB won’t be releasing the cut, but she did go on to say, “…we’re very excited about the plans we have for all the multi-dimensional DC characters that are being developed right now.”

While Justice League may be the poster child for the ills of studio meddling, it was actually Ayer’s Suicide Squad that was the first victim of the divisive reaction to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Ayer was said to have planned a darker movie akin to that of BvS, but WB had ordered the movie be re-edited into a more upbeat and ‘fun’ romp—something audiences could care less about.

For now, fans are still all about #ReleaseTheAyerCut, and even Ayer himself has been active online about releasing his version of the film on HBO Max. He has gone on to say that it won’t cost as much to finish his cut as Justice League, and there is the promise of Leto’s real performance as the Joker.

While the studio may be adamant on not releasing Ayer’s version of the movie, fans are hoping that they change their minds. After all, ZSJL didn’t seem possible only until a year ago. After all this positive buzz from Justice League, WB must be crazy not to at least have a discussion about it.

For now, catch Zack Snyder’s Justice League now streaming on HBO Max.
