Taika Waititi is set to direct Thor: Love and Thunder for the MCU, but he’s going to do a little segway and direct a film called Next Goal Wins based on the 2014 documentary from Mike Brett and Steve Jamison. Some would think that this would hinder Waititi’s development on Love and Thunder, but the good news is, he’s actually finished with the script.
As per Deadline, Waititi has finished the screenplay for Thor: Love and Thunder. It’s likely this won’t be the final draft, but it’s good to know that we’re already that far along when it comes to the filmmaking process. Nothing else had been revealed about the movie, but hopefully we get some new details come the D23 Expo later this month.
My guess is they’ll follow Jane Foster’s storyline in the comics in which she’s diagnosed with cancer, and she takes up Mjolnir to become the new Thor. Since Mjolnir was shattered in the main timeline, I’m curious on whether this Jane Foster will come from an alternate reality—which kind of opens the door to a team-up with Hemsworth’s Thor.
With the script done, I guess fans could rest easy thinking that it won’t hinder development on Love and Thunder. With Next Goal Wins looking to be a smaller film, I imagine Waititi could jump right into development for Thor in a few months. After all, he’s already had experience on big blockbuster movies like Thor: Ragnarok.
Just in case you’re curious, here’s the trailer for the original documentary Next Goal Wins:
While the wait for Thor: Love and Thunder is still long, Waititi is actually coming out with a movie this year. His Nazi satire film, Jojo Rabbit, starring Waititi, Scarlett Johansson, Sam Rockwell, Rebel Wilson, and Alfie Allen, is set to release in theaters Oct. 18.
