The Last Airbender Creators Tease Avatar Universe Expansion

Avatar: The Last Airbender’s arrival at Netflix had introduced the world of benders to a whole new generation of fans and The Legend of Korra is currently one of the most watched shows on the platform. Though show creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino have exited the live-action adaptation, they do tease that they have ‘planted seeds’ for the eventual expansion of the universe.

Talking to Polygon, DiMartino had said:

“Yes, there are many seeds we planted through both series and in the graphic novels that could be expanded on and explored. The Avatar universe is a big place and has a long history so there’s a lot of potential for new stories.”

While there are no specifics about where the world of Avatar can expand, there are definitely a lot of mediums worth exploring besides comics. What’s great is, they don’t have to be stuck in the era of just Aang or Korra as there are multiple Avatars from the past where they can center their stories on; why stop in the past? How about a look at the present day where benders had existed this whole time?

With Netflix looking for their own Star Wars or Harry Potter, Avatar definitely seemed like a good contender. Too bad they couldn’t hash it out with DiMartino and Konietzko. Hopefully they’re able to reconcile in the future, but for now, it looks like the showrunners are going to be focusing on other things.

No release date has been made for the live-action Avatar show, but you can catch the original animated one on Netflix.
