Pro-wrestling with it colorful characters and crazy storylines has always been a franchise that’s been pointed at pre-teen boys and men, but even if the whole industry does seem like silly fun, the stories of the performers have always been filled with all kinds of drama, from the diseases they contract from keeping their bodies massive, to the constant violence that fans have been demanding from them.
We’ve had dramas like Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler and Netflix’s GLOW before, but now A24 wants in on that pro-wrestler story with The Iron Claw starring Zac Efron (Neighbors), Jeremy Allen White (The Bear), and Harris Dickinson (Triangle of Sadness). Watch the trailer here:
The official description reads:
The true story of the inseparable Von Erich brothers, who made history in the intensely competitive world of professional wrestling in the early 1980s.
If you actually wiki the story of the Von Erich brothers, you’ll find a truly tragic story that pretty much fits A24’s deal. I won’t spoil anything about it, but you can expect the story to really lean in on the pressure that comes with becoming a real-life superhero for the entertainment of the masses.
The film is being helmed by Sean Durkin who is best known for his work in dramas like Martha Marcy May Marlene and the recent series Dead Ringers with Rachel Weisz. We don’t know exactly what to expect with The Iron Claw, but based on what actually happened to the family, I bet it’s going to be pretty sad.
The Iron Claw comes to cinemas on Dec. 22.
