With the character seemingly running its course on the big screen though, fans were ready to accept that PotC was moving forward without him—and producer Jerry Bruckheimer may have just confirmed this.

Talking to ComicBook.com while promoting the release of Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, Bruckheimer explains:

“It’s hard to tell. You don’t know, you really don’t know… You don’t know how they come together. You just don’t know. Because with Top Gun you have an actor who is iconic and brilliant. And how many movies he does before he does Top Gun, I can’t tell you. But we’re gonna reboot Pirates, so that is easier to put together because you don’t have to wait for certain actors.”

No doubt Bruckheimer could be talking about Depp, but seeing as the actor has been the center of a public feud with Amber Heard, I can imagine that he doesn’t have too many huge projects lined up.

It’s also worth noting that the term ‘reboot’ has a bit of a loose meaning nowadays. Is the Pirates reboot going to be a full top-to-bottom reboot like the all-woman Ghostbusters from 2016? Or is it going to be a ‘legacy’ reboot like Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Ghostbusters: Afterlife?

Admittedly, the Jack Sparrow character is lightning in a bottle, but I would be excited to see if someone could come up with a new version of the character, or at least something in the same spirit, in a rebooted Pirates movie.

Until Disney reveals some more details, we’ll just have to wait. In the meantime, the next Pirates of the Caribbean film is yet to receive a release date.

Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow to Get a Limited Role in the Next Pirates of the Caribbean Movie? https://www.geekfeed.com/jack-sparrow-in-next-pirates-of-the-caribbean/ Thu, 07 Mar 2024 10:31:12 +0000 https://www.geekfeed.com/?p=81347 It was 2017 since we last saw Captain Jack Sparrow on the big screen, and it was in 2007 when we last got a critically-acclaimed Pirates of the Caribbean movie. While it looked like Disney was done with the Jack Sparrow character, it does seem that they’re ready to bring Johnny Depp back aboard in some capacity.

As per insider Daniel Richtman (via @HollywoodHandle), the sixth Pirates of the Caribbean movie is looking to have Depp back as Captain Sparrow for only a supporting role in the movie. We don’t have a solid plot yet, but the last update we got was that there were two POTC films in the works, one of which was being developed by Barbie star Margot Robbie.

For now, it doesn’t seem that Disney has any idea where to take the franchise without Depp as one of the central characters, but with all the issues surrounding Depp and his very messy public feud with ex-wife Amber Heard, it made sense that they would step back from all the controversy before any Pirates film could push forward.

If you ask me, Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow has kind of been overplayed in the last two films. After all, he started out as an anti-hero in the franchise and was more of a co-lead alongside Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley). They just decided to shift focus to him after World’s End, and though the character of Jack is fun, he doesn’t allow for any kind of meaningful arc compared to a more traditional protagonist.

Then again, that’s just my take.

A sixth Pirates of the Caribbean film has not been officially announced.

The Last of Us Showrunner Pitched Pirates of the Caribbean Reboot to Disney https://www.geekfeed.com/pirates-of-the-caribbean-reboot-pitched-to-disney/ Thu, 07 Sep 2023 15:43:01 +0000 https://www.geekfeed.com/?p=78610 After critical hits with Chernobyl and The Last of Us, everyone is wondering what’s next for showrunner Craig Mazin. Though it’s obvious he’s going to be coming back to TLOU again for a second season, he’s confirmed he’s started work on another Disney IP.

Talking to the LA Times, Mazin confirms that he’s worked on a treatment for a reboot of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise for Disney, but development is halted as the strikes are still ongoing. He says, “We pitched it and thought there’s no way they’re buying it, it’s too weird… And they did! And then he wrote a fantastic script and the strike happened and everyone’s waiting around.”

Despite the success of the Pirates films in the theaters, they have been in a kind of weird place ever since the original trilogy ended with World’s End. Some say that they have become over-reliant on the character of Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) throughout the course of the films; and with Depp’s recent public dispute with ex-wife Amber Heard, Disney (and a bunch of other studios) probably don’t want him to be around their billion-dollar franchises for a good long while.

It’s unclear what direction POTC wants to move forward with. Last December, producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed there were two Pirates films in the works, one starring Barbie actress Margot Robbie. It’s very likely that the project with Mazin is the second one that Bruckheimer mentioned; but as of now, we don’t have any further details.

A next Pirates of the Caribbean film hasn’t been announced, but you check out The Last of Us and Chernobyl now streaming on Max.

Disney Boss Updates on Johnny Depp and Status of Pirates of the Caribbean https://www.geekfeed.com/depp-and-status-of-pirates-of-the-caribbean/ Tue, 06 Jun 2023 15:03:20 +0000 https://www.geekfeed.com/?p=77156 It was 2017 when we got Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, and for now, it’s unsure where Disney wants to go with the Pirates franchise.

Talking to the New York Times, Disney’s President of Motion Picture Production Sean Bailey updates on the status of POTC and talks about the involvement of the franchise’s biggest star, Johnny Depp. Bailey explains, “We think we have a really good, exciting story that honors the films that have come before but also has something new to say.”

Last year, it was reported that two Pirates films are in development, one with a younger cast, and one with Barbie star Margot Robbie. We haven’t gotten an update on neither projects throughout the entire year, but with the money that Pirates managed to pull in, you can bet that Disney is hard at work trying to crack the future of what some are calling a ‘has-been’ franchise.

As for Depp’s inclusion with the next film, Bailey continued, “Noncommittal at this point,” which is a nice little way to keep his foot on the door should Depp decide he wants to make a comeback. After the last two films, it does seem that Depp has nowhere else to go with the Jack Sparrow character, but it’s still one of his most beloved roles.

Personally, I don’t know what direction they could take POTC after The World’s End, but I’m always eager to watch Disney make an attempt. Personally, I think it’s time to let the Jack Sparrow character lie, but there definitely is room for someone to take on his kooky mantle.

The next Pirates of the Caribbean movie has not been announced.

2 Pirates of the Caribbean Movies in the Works https://www.geekfeed.com/2-pirates-of-the-caribbean-movies-in-the-works/ Wed, 21 Dec 2022 14:07:10 +0000 https://www.geekfeed.com/?p=72566 After Dead Men Tell No Tales, it seems that the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise may be done for now. Margot Robbie was said to have had a project that didn’t push through a few months back, but now producer Jerry Bruckheimer says there is actually some hope for anyone waiting for another Pirates film.

Taking to The Hollywood Reporter, Bruckheimer confirms that there are actually two Pirates of the Caribbean films in the works, one of them being Margot Robbie’s. When asked why it’s been hard to get another Pirates movie off the ground, Bruckheimer explains:

“Oh God, they’re all hard. I think we’re getting very close on that one, too. We have a very good script. We developed two of them — the one with Margot Robbie and one with a younger cast. The Margot Robbie one needs a little more work. The younger cast one is close. Hopefully we’ll get both of them.”

Though Robbie did say that her Pirates project wasn’t moving forward, Bruckheimer says there could still be hope. He continues:

“It’s alive for me. It’s alive for Disney. I’m sure she was disappointed it didn’t go first — or maybe not because she’s very busy, so it might be a blessing to push this a bit. We believe we’ll get it made. It’s a very strong story.”

If you ask me, the Pirates franchise kind of took a misstep when they decided that Jack Sparrow should be the main character, when his function is initially supposed to be a foil character to the hero (Will Turner). I guess they tried to do that again with Will Turner’s son being the young lead, but at this point, it just feels like Depp has lost all enthusiasm for playing the part.

Hopefully Bruckheimer will be able to update us on the next Pirates movie soon.

Margot Robbie Courted for Next Pirates of the Caribbean Film https://www.geekfeed.com/margot-robbie-courted-for-next-pirates-of-the-caribbean-film/ Tue, 17 May 2022 11:33:21 +0000 https://www.geekfeed.com/?p=65241 Margot Robbie is a modern-day icon, not only landing solid roles with Harley Quinn and the upcoming Barbie, but also finding work with respected directors like Quentin Tarantino and Martin Scorsese. Now word has it that she could be headlining one of the biggest box office franchises that has recently lost its steam.

Talking to The Sunday Times, producer Jerry Bruckheimer has confirmed that they are courting Robbie for a role in the next Pirates of the Caribbean entry. He says, “Yes. We’re talking to Margot Robbie. We are developing two Pirates scripts — one with her, one without.” When asked if Johnny Depp would come back as Jack Sparrow, Bruckheimer replied, “Not at this point… The future is yet to be decided.”

When it comes to having a list of A-list women, Bruckheimer admits it’s a lot harder compared to getting men. “I still get the same list of ten men the studios want in a movie. You still get Tom, Leonardo. Get one of these big names and you’ve got a good shot at getting a movie made,” explains Bruckheimer, “Women are harder. It’s just not that strong a list yet.”

Going back to Pirates though, I think that Depp has really fizzled out in the role of Sparrow, and the recent entries just didn’t have that same enthusiasm that the original trilogy had. Though I would like to see him come back to the role someday, I think at this current stage, with his legal issues in the forefront, it would be better if he just took a break from any huge franchises for a while.

As for Robbie, I think she would be great in any action-adventure franchise. I don’t know who she could be in a Pirates film, but she definitely should be a much more different character than Elizabeth Swann. Maybe she could be the new captain of the Black Pearl? If you ask me, she might make for a great villain as well.

The next Pirates of the Caribbean  property has not been officially announced.

Johnny Depp Admits In Court He Hasn’t Watched the Pirates of the Caribbean Films https://www.geekfeed.com/johnny-depp-admits-in-court-he-hasnt-watched-the-pirates-of-the-caribbean-films/ Thu, 21 Apr 2022 15:33:06 +0000 https://www.geekfeed.com/?p=64956 Johnny Depp is currently making headlines as his defamation case against Amber Heard has finally been taken to court, and while the focus is on the relationship between Depp and his ex-wife, there was a weird revelation made about Depp’s billion-dollar film franchise Pirates of the Caribbean.

During Depp’s testimony, he’s revealed that he hasn’t seen any of the Pirate films. He explains (via The Independent): “I had quite different ideas about [Captain Jack Sparrow], so I incorporated my notes into [the] character and brought that character to life. Much to the chagrin of Disney, initially,” Depp continues, “I didn’t see it. But I believe that the film did pretty well, apparently, and they wanted to keep going, making more and I was fine to do that.”

While I’m sure some fans would be bummed to think that Depp hasn’t seen one of his most celebrated characters of all time, I think it completely tracks for him. There are several other actors who don’t watch their own material, and they’ve revealed it publicly. Helena Bonham Carter once admitted she didn’t watch her films, and Adam Driver seems uncomfortable about when it comes to watching himself act.

Going back to Depp though, his last two runs as Jack Sparrow haven’t really made the same hype that they did during the height of the franchise. Admittedly some think the lackluster performance could be a result of his altercations with Heard, but we’ll just have to wait and see what information comes out of his testimony.

For now, fans are just eager to hear both sides of the case and see what really went down between the two.
