Today on AD, Margot Robbie takes us behind the scenes of ‘Barbie’ for an exclusive tour of the Barbie Dreamhouse. When tasked with bringing these iconic childhood toys to life on the big screen, Greta Gerwig enlisted the skills of production designer Sarah Greenwood and set decorator Katie Spencer. Taking inspiration from Palm Springs midcentury modernism they’ve created a whimsical fuchsia pink fantasy where slides replace stairs and there’s not a wall in sight–when touring this impressive set it’s hard not to feel a rush of playful nostalgia as Greta states “I wanted to capture what was so ridiculously fun about the Dreamhouses.

Though we did have hints in previous trailers about how life in Barbie Land functions, we get to see that they kind of literally translated it on the film, with Barbie’s house being filled with flat decals, and Barbie not really interacting with any water or food.

We also see that her house, like the houses of the other Barbies, are also open, and they can all just wave at each other from their bedrooms when their days are started.

The movie is expected to be a kid-friendly adventure, but it does look like the film is also going to delve into the stories history of the toy and how she’s influenced pop-culture for decades. I’m interested to see what the movie has to say about Barbie as an icon, because she’s kind of a divisive hero when it comes to the idea of feminism (more so with modern feminism).

Talking to The Kelly Clarkson Show (via DiscussingFilm), Robbie reveals that she would do anything that Gerwig asked as long as her Barbie got her signature Dream House. She says, “Please can we have a Dreamhouse where she has a slide that goes from her bedroom down to her pool because that is my goal in life.”

Though Barbie’s Dream House has come in all kinds of shapes and sizes over the years, the slide from the bedroom to the pool always seems like an element that keeps coming back. After all, it’s probably one of the more ‘action-oriented’ features of the playset as the rest of the rooms don’t really have Barbie moving on her own.

Based on what we’ve seen in the trailers, it does seem like Barbie Land is going to be some kind of literal interpretation of how Barbie toys are played with, what with the play sets and different outfits. They’ve even gone so far as to make Barbie stand on tiptoe and grab things with an open palm; what are the odds we’re going to see Barbie and Ken nude with no nipples and genitals as well?

Barbie and Ken are having the time of their lives in the colorful and seemingly perfect world of Barbie Land. However, when they get a chance to go to the real world, they soon discover the joys and perils of living among humans.

If you’ve watched The Meyerowitz Stories and A Marriage Story, it’s clear that Baumbach has a penchant for dysfunctional family drama, but it looks like he’s going to be upping the ante with White Noise by delivering us an odd family, but they’re also being surrounded by these really big, dramatic events.

Though Adam Driver is kind of known for playing a type lately, I’m really interested to see him play this dopey looking father figure. It’s also great to see Greta Gerwig onscreen again. Though she’s been kicking it out of the park with films like Lady Bird and Little Women, it’s nice to see she still has those acting chops to star opposite a critical darling like Driver.

Even the rest of the characters look quirky and fun, but we’ll just have to wait until release to meet all of them.

Catch White Noise in theaters when it comes out Nov. 26. The movie officially starts streaming on Netflix on Dec. 30.

Talking to The Sun (via Culture Crave), Robbie urges fans to re-evaluate expectations when it comes to the Barbie movie. She says, “Whatever people expect the Barbie movie to be like, they need to totally re-think it because Greta Gerwig has done something ­special here”

While Barbie could have easily just been a toy promotion film like The LEGO Movie, the inclusion of Gerwig and Baumbach has a lot of fans curious about the movie. With Little Women Gerwig has proven herself to find a unique voice when it comes to adaptations; and Baumbach is best known for his authentic dialogue and dramas—what could he possibly have to say in a Barbie film.

My guess is, we would actually get to see a deep-dive into Barbie as an icon and what she really means to modern women. Sure, she was considered to be the poster child of the ‘independent woman’, but she has recently been criticized for promoting unhealthy beauty standards. What will Barbie have to say about that?

The movie is set to come out later in 2023, so it could be a while before we get our first teaser. In the meantime, fans can just hype themselves up with leaked set photos of Robbie and Gosling in adorable costumes.
