With the release of Onward finally out of the way, Disney Pixar can now start promotion on their next film, Soul. What’s great is, we have a new trailer, and it tries to explain to us what happens to people before (and after) they exist on Earth.

Check it out:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOsLIiBStEs

Here’s the official description:

Joe Gardner is a middle-school band teacher who gets the chance of a lifetime to play at the best jazz club in town. But one small misstep takes him from the streets of New York City to The Great Before – a fantastical place where new souls get their personalities, quirks and interests before they go to Earth. Determined to return to his life, Joe teams up with a precocious soul, 22, who has never understood the appeal of the human experience. As Joe desperately tries to show 22 what’s great about living, he may just discover the answers to some of life’s most important questions.

If anything, it feels a lot like Peter Docter’s previous film Inside Out, in which a movie tries to ‘explain’ why things are in a simplified way. This time though, it won’t be based on psychology, but rather something more complicated. With the afterlife being so closely tied to things like religion, I wonder how Docter will manage to pull off this story without angering anyone in Disney.

The movie is set to come out in June, but with the Coronavirus crisis at an all-time high, it’s likely that we could see some kind of delay down the line. Then again, maybe Pixar will just have to wait and see the state of the nation in April before they pull their original plans for this movie.

Soul is set to hit theaters June 19.
