Shirley Trailer: Regina King Plays the First Black Congresswoman in the US

Regina King may have solidified her place in comic book pop-culture as the star of Damon Lindelof’s Watchmen series, but now she’s teaming up with Netflix for an interesting biopic about the first black congresswoman of the US who also had the mettle to run for president of the United States.

Check out the trailer for Shirley:

The official description for the movie reads:

Regina King stars as Shirley Chisholm in SHIRLEY–the story of the first Black congresswoman and her trailblazing run for president of the United States. Directed by John Ridley and co-starring, Lance Reddick, Lucas Hedges, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Christina Jackson, Dorian Crossmond Missick, Amirah Vann, with André Holland and Terrence Howard, the film chronicles Chisholm’s audacious, boundary-breaking 1972 presidential campaign.

We know that King is already a solid actress, but fans are commending how she’s able to get the accent down for her version of Shirley Chisholm. King is also surrounded by a stelar cast which includes the likes of Terence Howard and Lucas Hedges.

Let’s also not forget that Lance Reddick is also making an appearance in this film. Though it’s been months since we lost Reddick, it’s pretty great that we can still see him onscreen for a few more projects.

When it comes to the Civil Rights movement back in the 70s, people usually know one or two key figures, but just like Judas and the Black Messiah, it would be great to find out even more heroes of the movement who may not have as huge a role in the spotlight.

Shirley is set to hit Netflix on March 22.
