David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are currently working on the last season of Game of Thrones, but it looks like they already have their next project set out for them over at Lucasfilm. According to StarWars.com, the two will be taking over their own series of movies set in the Star Wars Universe.

Lucasfilm head Kathy Kennedy says:

“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”

Benioff and Weiss have also released a joint statement saying:

“In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since,” Benioff and Weiss said in a joint statement. “We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.”

So far, we don’t know what their series of movies will be about, but it’s said to be a third branch of Star Wars movies apart from the Skywalker Saga as well as Rian Johnson’s original trilogy. There aren’t even any details if the anthology films fall under their own separate banner or will be part of Benioff and Davis’ work.

If I were to make a guess, Benioff and Weiss could delve into the Old Republic lore of Star Wars. It certainly hasn’t been explored cinematically, and there’s a lot of rich potential for stories there. Then again, with such a vast and interesting world, they could pick any era and still come up with a great movie.

Hopefully, we get an update on their Star Wars projects when Game of Thrones 8 wraps production.
